How have i just gained 13GB of free space??

I have a 64GB 6S. My free space had been dropping much quicker than i thought it should, even with the photos i was taking. I was down to 4GB free space. Only a week or so previous I was at 9GB and i really don't think i'd taken 5GB of photos.

So last night i'm at 4GB free, right?

I erase my phone, all content & settings but right before i do that i back the phone up.

Today i send the phone in for a new battery as i intend on keeping it a few more years. I get the phone back and then i go to restore from backup.

I now have 17GB free space and i've no idea how. I've had a look and all my photos SEEM to be on the phone. All the apps that were there appear to be there. Nothing appears to be missing (not to say that there isn't anything missing, but i have over 4000 photos so i can't really go through 1-by-1.

I'm just wondering if some knowledgable soul could explain how 13GB has just appeared out of nowhere.
 
13GB worth of cache files? Does that sound normal/possible?

The last time this phone was erased would've been December 2 years ago. If 13GB of cache files sounds likely then all is well but if that is an exceptionally high amount then i wonder where so much came from.
 
It’s OK, provided you don’t have a situation where you run out of space while having multiple gigabytes of cache.
On my iPhone XS 256 GB I have ~45 GB of cache. So I wouldn’t call 13 GB over 2 years very high.
 
Well, you'd run out of memory and you wouldn't be able to download big apps or take photos. Usually iOS cleans those temporary files automatically though, no need to worry.
 
Oh right i thought you were meaning something else would happen with the phone :D

Haven't you ever heard anything about the #OtherGate? :D iOS is quite bad at cleaning iCloud temp files and apps cache, which is usually marked as "Other" taking your hard drive space. As cache is not included in the backup, backup > erase > restore backup will reclaim some free space. But keep in mind it's only temp solution as, sadly, cache will come back in some time...
