"No escape from Reality...”
Just got one!

I searched the forums but I couldn't find a specific discussion on this (sorry).

My :apple:TV gets really hot. How hot do these things get? I then put in my bedroom, but the shelf it was on and the shelfs around it got really hot too. What's up?

Also, putting it in "standby" doesn't really turn it off. I had to unplug the thing..

Do I need a new fan? Installed? I assume if the fan didn't work, it would overheat and lock up. I did run the thing for a few hours last night downstairs and it worked fine.

Thanks.

I'm afraid not. It just runs really hot. All the time.

Nothing wrong with the fan. I was quite surprised too when I got mine, but there doesn't seem to be any way round it at all (other than turning it off, as you say)

I went on Apple support site forum and users encourged everyone to got to Apple's Product Feedback and tell them to make an update that makes it run cooler and turn the unit on/off:

They call it a "hotplate" for a reason. It gets real hot. This is normal. Sleep mode actually does cool it down quite a bit, but it is still warm.

I think it would be good for some to have the option of turning it off, but I won't ever do that. I want my AppleTV to sync updates and podcasts when they come in.

It gets hot, that is normal.

Hehe. Make your own company with the Varietys. An MBP and an Xbox 360 variety would work out well.
