Okay, I my new 24" iMac, but I have one silly question. I download a file in "dmg" format and it puts it on my desktop. I then double click the icon to install the program. but then what do I do with the dmg icon of the program once it has been installed.

I tried to drag the dmg icon to the trash can but when I do that it uninstalls the program altogether. what's up with that and how do I stop it from doing that? I just want to get rid of the dmg icon from my desktop but obviously I don't want to uninstall the program.

You haven't installed the app. Drag the thing inside the white icon to the Applications folder and then delete both icons from the desktop :)

When you open the DMG file to reveal the app, drag the app to your Applications folder then delete the DMG. Your app will be in your Applications folder for future usage

Indeed. You know the zip format? It basically has the same concept as dmg.... to compress files. Just take the application out, trash the dmg file and you'll all set! No worries.

Congrats for your new iMac. I hope it serves you well. :)

also, while I have you mac pros in here, I will ask another Q. how can I take out certain program icons that are in my task bar on the bottom? there's stuff like that Garage Band stuff that I could care less about.

Just drag them off and they will disappear in a puff of smoke

I am running HandBrake as we speak. so when I try to drag the HandBrake hard drive looking thingy to the trash can it tells me HandBrake is in use and it wont let me.

Quit HandBrake then do it...you can then open HandBrake from the Applications folder :)

To keep something in the Dock, either drag the icon from the Applications folder to there, or while the app is open, hold the mouse clicking on the icon in the Dock, and choose 'Keep in Dock'...

The DMG is a disk image and acts like a removable CD or floppy disk (remember those?). To unmount it drag it down to the dock over the trash / eject icon. When the disk image is unmounted drag the .dmg file you downloaded to the trash

Very simple. By the way, that "taskbar" you're referring to is called the "Dock" in Mac OS X. It's basically the application launcher. Regarding your question...

If you want to get rid of an icon on the Dock...
1. Locate the icon you want to remove.
2. Click on it, drag it away from the dock...
3. POOF!

;)

whoops! silly me. sorry to refer the Dock as a task bar. I've been a Bill Gates user since the beginning of man kind so it's gonna take me a little while to convert over to Mac lingo. :D

This doesn't seem to work with Firefox. :(
Is there something different there?
