I just though I would share this with people that have been on the waiting list forever, as it may be a way to get your MacBook Pro much faster.

When the MacBook Pro came out, I wanted one. Only thing is, just like everyone else, I wasn't crazy about the 3-4 week (or even longer) leadtime before they shipped. So I didn't pre order. Instead, I went to my local apple store (Willow Bender in Plano Texas) every couple of weeks to see if they had gotten them in. When apple finally started shipping, the store let me know that they had started to get them in, but they had a long waiting list of about 75 people. They asked if I wanted to put my name on the list, and I said no. I figured it would take forever to wait for 75 people to get the MacBooks.

Well, last Tuesday I called the Apple store regarding the new Minis, and they said they would be getting them in on Wed. I also asked about the status of the MacBook Pro list, and they said they had been getting them in, but that the list was still about 75, as new people had been added to the list while older orders had been filled. They asked again if I wanted to put my name on the list, and I said, sure, go ahead, as they didn't even require a deposit.

Well guess what, 3 days after putting my name on the list, they called and said they had my MacBook Pro in and wanted to know if I still wanted it. I told them "hell yeah", and that I would be right there. Curiously, I asked them about the other 75 people on the list in front of me, and wondered how they could have gotten through the list that quickly. Well, here is the catch. When the apple store calls, they don't leave a message if you aren't there, they just move on to the next person in the list. If you do answer the phone, you have to agree to pick up the MacBook that same day, or again, they just move to the next person. In my case, I just got lucky, they called 60 people on the list ahead of me and noone answered their phone.

So, if you want a MacBook Pro fast, put your name on your local Apple Store's list, and BE SURE YOU ANSWER THE PHONE WHEN THEY CALL. It worked for me.

Honestly, I felt bad for the other people on the list ahead of me, but the apple store made the rules - all I did was answer the phone when they called.

Hopefully this helps someone get a MacBook Pro that has been waiting forever.

Jeff

It's always worth a shot by putting your name on the list. Also, a lot of people didn't even put their names on any list and just went to the store stating they were ready to buy and were sold a MBP. My opinion is if you are not buying a CTO machine, not including a RAM upgrade then it's better to get it at the store. Keep paying a visit and calling in. Many have gotten their systems this way and not have to wait 2-3 months.

Exactly what I was thinking...

You have still been waiting since January 10th. ;)

Good advice anyway if someone wants a stock MBP.

wow... the store i got my MBP didn't have a list. that's how i got mine early, went to store right when it opened.:)

What models are they stocking?

I am on "the waiting list" at the Christiana Mall Store in Delaware. King of Prussia's store is not doing a waiting list. They have a model on the floor of the store called "The Ultimate" which is a built-to-order option on the web... it is the MacBook Pro with 2.16, the 7200 RPM 100 GB drive, and 1 GB of RAM.

I told the people at the Christiana Mall store that this is the one I wanted, and they said "FINE." I was told by the people at the other Apple store that this "ultimate" model is a built-to-order and not stocked in the stores.

So who is right?

Lucky for you, but I'd be seriously miffed if I had been waiting on the list patiently only for them to skip right past me if I'm not around to answer the phone. That's actually not very good at all.

I gotta agree. You do all that waiting and all you get in return is one stinking phone call?!? I'd be ripping mad.

It is CTO, but the stores order them like this. My Apple store had 3 models of the MBP. The 2 stock configs availble as for $1999.99 and $2499.99 and one model that had the 7200RPM 100GB drive and 2GB of RAM for $2899.99. I think it is nice of the store to stock this model, saves you the trouble of waiting for it to be built.

How I got a MacBook Pro after only 7 weeks of waiting, with three days of those 7 weeks on an official waiting list

Yeah, but...

Yeah, but it's not like you were standing in a line or something, your name was just on a list.

That's just the price you pay when an item is really popular.

Doesn't matter, if I've taken the time to do my best to get in line, I expect more than one phone call before I just get skipped over.

I'd actually be in the store going bonkers if it were me in that situation.

In your case, you could ask them to simply post on MR that your Mac was in. I'm sure you'd get the message - one way or another - within a few seconds. ;)

i called around in the chicago area and a few stores (downtown, oakbrook, schaumburg) have the 2.0 in stock. However, there is still a list for the 1.83s...
