How important is "Total Bit Rate", etc.

Hi,

I downloaded 1080p (562MB) video trailer of a game which had a Total Bit Rate of ~28,000 kbps and then a Bit Rate of ~1,500 kbps.
I created an ATV/iPad version of it in iTunes which made it 720p and ~100MB, but the Bit Rate changed to 125 kbps and the Total Bit Rate to ~4,900 kbps... what do they actually affect?

Bitrate shows the quality. It simply shows how many bits the file has per second. The higher the bitrate, the better the quality and the bigger the file size. The other bitrate (lower) is likely the audio bitrate. If you have too high bitrate, then some devices (such as Apple TV, old-ish Macs, iToys) may not be able to play it because it requires too much horsepower
