How is battery usage calculated?

Does it include things like listening to music while the screen is off, or is it the equivalent of Android's "screen on time" (SOT)?

Usage time includes all activities done in foreground but also background. Consequently, as you said, listening music while screen is off is added to your usage time. Usage Time ≠ Screen on Time (SOT)
