I know of several people that have it that are definitely NOT developers. Do even these people just get a developers license (for $99/yr) and get the developer preview? Or is there something I'm missing out on here?

Seems like half the people out on the MBP forums have ML...Seems unlikely so many people bought a dev license.

Thanks.

People probably get it from filesharing sites using torrents. It's very easy, although illegal

illegal aside, I was under the impression that you had to sign your macbook up for to the dev program to even install ML? Just like with iphones and ios6 betas??

Or am I wrong in that?

Like can you install ML regardless as long as you have the install? o_O

Mac OS doesn't require hardware registration but iOS does.

There are no restrictions like the UDID ones that are in place for iOS.

Aside from developers there is also an Apple program called Appleseed that provides members of the public with Beta access on an invitation basis.

I'm not sure iOS devices do, actually. I have a dev account but I completely forgot to add my phone to the portal and it installed iOS 6 fine.

As long as you renew your dev account it remembers previous registrations unless you manually remove them from the portal i think. Not sure though.
