I am thinking about getting my first smart phone and read a comparison between the galaxy S3 and the iphone 4S. they said the galaxy's battery runs nearly two days of what they call 'normal use' compared to the iphones 1 day.
My girlfriend has the iphone and she def has to charge it every evening so i cant imagine they are too far off.
With larger display, faster procesor and 4G(which i hear draws on the battery more). How the heck does the iphone have nearly half the battery life?

Is there some glaring feature im missing?

I have both phones and I agree with you ..

The reasons IMO are :

1. Battery size difference (S3 has almost 150% battery size compared to iPhone)
2. Screen tech difference ... AMOLED perform much better when you have too much black on the screen ... on a normal use day (no games, etc) it would perform better on battery
3. Android vs iOS ( Nobody can compare this on any given day so we'll just leave it at that )

With push email on, I do 6-7 messages on Whatsapp and the battery will drop by 1% on the iPhone ... same thing on the S3 and it stays the same ... I look after about 20 mins and still the same  ... so yeah I can compare them both side by side like this

You might be saying the S III has better battery life, but that's just your personal opinion with NOTHING scientific or anything of substance to really back it up. I could just as easily start a thread asking "why does the 4S battery life so much longer than the S III?" without having any proof

Besides, you're not comparing the right phones. S III is a 2012 phone, while the iPhone 4S is a 2011 product... wait till the 2012 version comes out and THEN compare the battery life.

Um, comparisons are done with existing phones, not future phones and things do not magically change january 1 of each year.

Then it would not be fair to compare the 5 with the sIII, right? That argument could go on forever. Existing phones get compared, that's the way it works.

Nobody is forcing apple top release at the end of the year. By that logic any phone coming out in january, just a few months after the 5, could not be compared because they would be 2013. Right? Just a couple of months after iphones are released the year changes and they are last years phone ineligible for comparison?

Why get so defensive over a phone/company? Are they paying you royalties?

The 45 is apples current phone, as long as it is it will be compared until the next release.

I always say this. People shouldnt be comparing the 4S so closely to the SIII, the next iPhone is closer in release to the SIII, so compare then.

Also, I've seen/read many reviews saying that the 4S and SIII are similar in battery life. This thread is another one of those pointless "making a claim without any evidence" sort of deals.

The snapdragon s4 is much much more power efficient than the a5. The a5 is a huge chip. By huge I mean area. This also means that it uses much more power. The Snapdragon s4 on the other hand is very small yet much faster. The galaxy SIII's display is also super amoled which helps as well. It also had a much bigger battery. The iphone 4s has never been a real battery life king. I don't know why people think it is. Its really not.

But we can go and say the same about the way we see it. S3 was released 8 or so months after the 4S and the 5 will be released 4-5 months after the S3. It makes more sense to compare phones that were released in CLOSER relation to one another.

I do agree that the phones will continue to one up one another because they are released at different times, but I honestly don't think what you're saying is fair.

This is pointless to argue about though, as we all know.

Don't have the SIII, but I have the GSII i777. It only has a 1650mah battery which is only like 200 larger than the 4/4S or so, but the Exynos chip is powerful and efficient. Stock it was between the 4S and 4 for battery life, and with the custom rom it can edge out what my 4 would do actually in use which was noticeably better than the 4S (fairly heavy use daily). Had two 4S and battery life has never been as good as the 4. Test have show the OS and architecture of the 4S draws quite a bit more power for most anything, someone on here posted the results awhile back showing the difference.

Even with the larger screens though, Androids processors are efficient and OS is well sorted vs before, plus battery sizes are larger than the iPhone. So they can last a decent amount of time even with the larger screen. Root it and get rid of any bloatware and you can see another big increase, AT&T bloat especially sucks.

Basically as an example, fiance use the 4S for her work. We both are fairly heavy users, she may even edge me out in emails daily lol. But generally by the end of the day it's a must to plug the 4S into the car charger especially if going out afterwards and sometimes still have to be careful about use if it didn't charge enough. My phone, I don't have to worry about going out afterwards and not having enough battery life left. Like right now I took off the last day and gave employees off as well b/c of the storm. Stats show battery at 1d and 42 min, with 3 hours of screen time, and about an hour of phone use, sync for emails etc.... still have 25% battery life left. I'm running the shostock2 rom.

I am running the Darkside Evolution ICS ROM v7 on the 3 3 sgs2 t989's we have. Pretty much stock minus bloatware with a couple of extras. Very stable. The wife's 4s is jailbroken.

According to the carrier's website I use, the SIII's battery is standard for an Android phone. Hence, it's not better than the 4S. The Fujitsu model that is available, however, lasts much longer than then SIII.

Galaxy S3 2100 mAh vs iPhone 4S 1430 mAh. no contest.

Android vs iOS. No contest. ;)

Battery size means nothing if the OS cannot manage it. Then there is also the power of the processor and all that. Me thinks the 4S is dragged down because of that.

There's no way the average person is getting 2 days out of the S3. Font get your hopes up. You also tend to do more with the S3 because you can (ie....web browse is easy with the extra screen real estate).

Wrong, the sgsII international has a 1650ma and the sgs2 t989 has 1850ma. The sgs3 has a 2100ma. You do the math.

Then there is also the power of the processor and all that. Me thinks the 4S is dragged down because of that.

So the weaker processor of the 4s drags it down more?

I don't see why not. I have a Samsung Focus, which isn't exactly new technology, but I could get 2 days on a charge no problem when the battery was new.

It's possible. Turn on airplane mode and just use wifi, brightness down to near 0 could get you there.

Seems you are fishing for comments, but I'll clarify anyway. I meant compared to the processor of the iPhone 4, the 4S has a shorter battery life despite using the same iOS. I was unaware that the S3 has a smaller battery compared to the one that sells there, so I cannot comment any further on that.

Is this thread a joke!? Some sorta Samsung paid personal spot!?

Search SG3 battery and see how many complaints pop up.

People suggesting you turn off GPS, WIFI, Dark Backgrounds...

This SG3 battery is a ***** joke, it IS NOT better than the iPhone 4S.

If going Droid, I HIGHLY recommend you get the HTC One X.

Beats the heck out of me.

Search the standby issue for the SG3 and then get back to this thread.

the standby issue was just an error in the code that made it display the battery draining faster than it really was.

"According to xda-developers, there’s a Galaxy S3 battery drain problem that affects international Galaxy S3 devices, and it appears to be Samsung’s fault. Fret not though, as a manual fix does exist, and chances are the South Korean Android maker will issue a patch to address the matter. However, so far Samsung has not confirmed the problem.

So what is causing quick battery drain on the Galaxy S3? It looks like the phone’s Cell standby feature is to blame, “sometimes accounting for 50-70% more than even the Screen or Android System.” That may sound like a serious issue, but various developers have researched the matter further, only to discovered that an error in framework-res.apk is responsible for the mess. Apparently the power drain value for Cell standby is set to 34mA, ten times higher than a “reasonable value” of 3.4mA. That would explain why the Galaxy S3 battery drain issues appear."
