can you play games with the highest setting ??

is your imac have i3 or i5 or i7 processor ?

do you have any problems ? do you miss something that windows machine have it ?

thanks for answering.

I have an i5. With a 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility 5850 (which, I think, is still top of the range...?).

As a gaming machine, I'd call it 'decent'. Running the newest, most demanding games on the highest settings won't happen (and it never will, in the iMac range). But I find I can set older games (circa 2006) to maximum, and newer games to medium/high. They look nice, and they run well. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with that.

I've increased the RAM in mine from 4GB to 12GB in the past 24 hours. The gaming performance looks to be slightly better for this upgrade, but only slightly.

i have a 27 inch i7 with 8gb ram and 1gb vid card

I can run starcraft 2 on ultra and still see 40-50 fps

during a huge battle that will lower to about 20-25fps

not bad, but decent enough for me

Sure. I mean, personally, I set my games to specs that mean they don't grind too much when the action hots up. But to each his own.

With my 1gb 5750 and Core i5 I do just fine with Black Ops, Borderlands, and Starcraft.

The top end iMac will play the latest games at native resolution with high-highest specs and no aa with decent framerate, but don't expect it to do so with future games.

I am running an i7 2.93 with 12gb ram. I play COD World at War, Black Ops and Medal of Honor on Windows 7 Bootcamp.

At full resolution and highest quality they all work if you will and look amazing but for online play it is too taxed for my liking at crucial battle times. I personally knock the resolution down to 1920 x (whatever it is, I think 1600) and turn some settings off like shell ejection, shadows, etc. and it rocks.

If gaming were my only priority, I would build a machine with multiple video cards. At least you have the flexibility of installing newer generations of video cards as they become available to stay up to speed.

I will say though that this iMac beats my previous wintel box with an i7 920 and a 1gb 4890 video card. I am extremely happy with my iMac and I could never go back to Windows as an everyday environment, OSX is so much better.

troutspinner

i run SC2 at Ultra Textures, High everything else at 2560x1440 resolution and get 50-60 FPS. That's really quite impressive, and looks astounding.

I don't really PC game other than SC2 but I know the 5750 will run most games maxed out at 1920x1080, which still looks fantastic.

Yeah, I'd second that.

Personally, I sacrifice resolution (1080p) for AA. I know TMR feels differently... the bottom line is; you can have one or the other, but you can't have both.

As another poster put it; if gaming's your priority, the iMac isn't for you. On the other hand, if gaming is important to you, but you also value the all-in-one design, fantastic display (you'll be spoiled forever...) and OS X possibilities, give the iMac a spin.

I've had mine for three months, and I'm very happy with it. I think it's a terrific overall computer. If I thought it sucked, I'd tell you (ask around the Mac Mini threads about me, if you want any proof of that...! ;))

i3 3.2 GHz 512MB ATI 5670 w/12GB of RAM

Runs all steam games in OS X without a hitch and in Win 7 Enterprise 64 Bit it will run Batman Arkham Asylum in all high settings. Wish I would have sprung for the 1GB card but it's hardly noticeable at the moment. I'm sure later down the line I'll be bitching....

Then comes the 27" hehe:D

what if you are using windows pc desktop with the same specs as you listed ? will it play modern games better ??

and how does your imac have 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility 5850 ? did you replace the video card ?

i can only see 1GB ATI Radeon Mobility 5750 on the apple online store.

does the batman game run in 60 fps ?

well guys i already have a 15'' macbook pro and ps3.

and i like how the pc games run in 60 fps which is higher then some ps3 games (like dead space 2)

note that i don't like first person games.

i am thinking to get an imac because it looks cool and it have a large screen which is great for watching movies.

what's your suggestions ?

No as a gaming computer

Sorry, no the top end imac cant be called a gaming computer. I tried this, bought the imac hoping it would replace my PC rig for gaming but it just isnt up to the task. If you own a gaming PC already you will be disapointed with the imac as a replacement, espcially multiplayer the imac just can handle it. An option though would be to buy a low end spec imac and hook up your gaming PC to imac using it as a monitor.

does the batman game run in 60 fps ?

Hello,

I have benchmarked Batman and many other games like Dead Space 2 on my Youtube channel "iMac Games benchmarking"

You can see them here:

For Batman I wrote:

Batman Arkham Asylum 2560 x 1440 "Max" Settings iMac 2007 27" i7 ATI 5750

30-45 fps with 1075 / 725 Overclock

Most of the current games run at 60fps at 1080p and 30-40fps at 1440p.

Deadspace 2 looks fantastic at Native with "Very High" settings, FPS are low though, 25-30 fps, so this looks like the start of the end for my iMac and games.

I expect that medium/low settings will be needed from 2012.

The iMac for me is a productivity device, I was just amazed how playable games were, so have made all these videos to show the Naysayers what is possible.

Naturally I have comments saying thing like "Fake" or "This must be a gaming PC" but I can promise, this is just a normal i7 iMac 27" with an overclock.

Would I buy an iMac for games? NO WAY!

But I have one, and I can tell you, Dead Space 2 at 2560 x 1440 is light years ahead of 720p on my 360/PS3, the same for other games like Half Life Fear Factory, so I am very happy with that.

In 2012 I will purchase a new games PC and continue to use the iMac as display, so I feel the 27" gives real value for money when considering the cost of an IPS panel.

Lets face it, once you've played a game at 1440p, you aren't going to want to go back to low res like 1080p! :D

can you just low res to 720p or 1080p on your imac and get 60 fps on dead space 2 ?

Hi,

The developers have limited the game to 30fps with V-Sync enabled. You can turn it off in the game, and then use the Catalyst Control Panel to override and get higher frames if you wish. at 1080p it will be 40-60fps.

That said, Dead Space is a game that doesn't need really high frames, it's been designed with consoles in mind, so I believe a locked 30fps steady frame is actually the best option.

But if you disagree and want to go against the Dev's design choice, you have the option.

Either way, it is a fantastic game!

I hope my YT channel can be of assistance in your decision.

When an iMac is running Windows, it is a PC. The hardware's the same, the software's the same.

And the Mobility 5850 is the true identity of the card. Apple call it a desktop 5750, because their performances are similar (though not the same).

I agree with almost all of this, mate. But, if I may say so, I think your assessment is slightly too pessimistic.

If you consider that a games console is locked-off, in hardware terms, as soon as its released (2005/6 for this current generations), provided a person comes to the iMac with the appropriate attitude, I think their gaming experience can be a very good one.

Someone coming from a dedicated gaming PC; yeah, I can see how they'd baulk at the iMac's limitations. But if you're coming from consoles, where you're used to graphics being throttled to fit within a machine's parameters; I think you'd be very happy.

I certainly am! Obviously my iMac has a productivity role also, but when I'm gaming, it's essentially a posh Xbox. Fallout: New Vegas, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, BioShock 2 all run very happily at 1080p (which looks perfectly fine... I honestly don't know what people are moaning about) with all effects on High. In addition to this, I also have access to games that aren't released on consoles, like Crysis (not that it's that good, in my opinion...), Civilization etc.

I think it's a damned decent games machine, provided your eyes are open from the outset. The display is beautiful, and the GPU is perfectly competent.

if they are the same then why the imac can't handle multiplayer 100% ? (some1 here said this)

You'd have to ask him, mate. But I think he's talking about the hardware demands of playing online multiplayer with high graphics settings. Which would be an equal problem for a PC of the same spec.

I don't play online, so I can't comment with certainty.

thanks for answering guys.

i will wait for the next imac update (2011).

can you change the imac hardware ? (replacing HDD,video card, the processor)

In apple online store it says i5 intel core processor and quad-core i5 .

is there a big difference between regular i5 and quad-core i5 ?

One is a dual core 3.6ghz with hyperthreading for 4 virtual threads. The other is a quad core 2.8ghz with no hyperthreading, so 4 real threads. The 3.6ghz dual core can turboboost itself up to 3.8ghz if I remember right, on single threaded tasks, while the quad core can turboboost itself up to 3.4ghz on single threaded tasks.

Apple only wants you changing out ram in the iMac, but nothing's stopping you from changing out the hdd or odd. The cpu and gpu are technically replaceable as well, but will void your warranty. There's also probably a limited amount of cpus and gpus that actually work with osx.
