How is glossy screen on iMac? Quad core coming?

I already have a MacBook Pro but now have decided to sell my old Windows XP desktop and replace that with an iMac. I have wanted one for the last 3-4 months but held off with all the rumors of the new iMac.
Overall I'm very impressed with the new iMac and it was well worth the wait. My only issue is how are most people finding the glossy screen to be? I've used a laptop once and found the glossy screen hard to deal with but i was in an area with bright sunlight. This would be used in an area with no windows. I'm almost tempted to hold off for the next upgrade thinking that maybe if there's a lot of complaints there will be a choice of a glossy and non-glossy screen like on the MacBook Pro.
Also, is there anything on the market that can be either fit on the screen and removed as needed or even a cover that can be put onto the screen to help with the glossiness? I'd like to hear it's not a problem because I'd really like to go with it.
Also, what does Intel have on the roadmap? It seems I've heard there's a quad core desktop chip coming out late this year and a mobile quad core chip coming out early next year? I would imagine both the MacBook Pro and iMac could be seeing an update to that.
 
hey i got my imac the other day and i love it. the screen is great im in a room with a window its right next to it and its no problem. u will be fine
 
The glossy screen is reflective but not that disturbing or noticeable after a while. Anyway, since the monitor is glass plated and I have some left over 3M dark window films for my house's windows as sunshield, I apply one on the iMac's glass screen. It kills 2 birds with one stone. The reflection is much reduced and the brightness is damped down as well by the film which carries only about 60% light transmission.

There are screen protectors on the market for LCD TV that fits the iMac's screen. Just look for them in AV shop or computer shop.
 
If you don't like the glossy screen on the laptop, then you will hate the screen on the iMac. It has real glass with a very highly reflective surface. In more than 30 years of using computers I have yet to see a screen with this much reflection.

A lot of us are waiting to buy a new iMac but like you we want to skip this generation. Apple made too many mistakes with it. Omitting the choice of glossy or matte screen is just one of them.

Glossy screen is Awesome... I tried it two times in AS and the colors looks great.SOme people complain about the reflection but if you don't focus on it, there is no problem. I will be going to buy a 24 inch this week.
 
Glossy screen: I do software development 8-10 hours per day and have no trouble with the display. In fact, my brain gives out long before my eyes do.

Quad core: My guess is mid-2008.
 
glossy screen is a non-issue for me, but I have no direct light behind me where they'd fall on the screen.

it's a great display, albeit somewhat "tall on the desk"

guess I need a lower desk :D

That's pretty pessimistic from a guy with a 24 foot screen listed in his signature. Really though I wouldn't be surprised if Apple would put out an iMac with intels fastest mobile chip a few months before they officially come out.

Rev. B of the ALU iMacs will probably see a CTO option with a quad-core, on the high-end. The 2.8 will become the standard for the 24'' models The 2.4 will become the base for the 20''.

I too was a bit concerned about the glossy screen, but once the new iMac arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. It really did not pose any issues for me. The picture quality is superior to any other screen on the market. I have the older iMac with the matte screen. Side by side, the new iMac screen is IMHO a better screen.

My plasma tv has a glossy screen. My mobile phone has a glossy screen, hell my alarm clock has a glossy screen and I've never once complained about the glare on those so if you are on the fence about buying this computer, jump off and get it. You will not be disappointed, unless you live in a glass house with windows surrounding your iMac. Then you may have issues.
 
Quad core in Alu iMac is probable in the new year. Given that the Mac Pro and the 2.8GHz iMac where both out before the competition, I expect Apple to lead the curve again with Penryn. As for the MacBook Pro, something will have to be redesigned because I doubt the power budget can handle it currently.

If you did not like the glossy screen on a laptop then you will hate the iMac screen. I looked at one in a store and after using it for a minute or to the screen was already starting to bother my eyes. But look at it in a store and see if the glossiness bothers you since whether a glossy screen is going to bother you or not we can't tell you.

Intel will be selling quad core notebook chips in the second half of 2008, it could be possible that Apple will get them early, but I would not count on that.
 
Mobile Quad-Cores won't be coming out until Mid-Way 2008. Expect 'em before January 1st, 2009.
