Hi,

I'd like to get some general opinions here about reading on a phablets?

How comfortable is it to just sit down an read from it for an hour or two? Would prefer a smaller tablet to it?

I generally read on my iPad mini, for 1-2 hours every night before bed; would I keep going back to my iPad?

Would I just be going back to my iPad solely for the battery life, rather than form factor?

G3 will be really bad because of software oversharpening. I saw a picture posted on the internet of an ebook on it and the text was atrocious looking, the sharpening made the letters too thin and wirey, not good at all. Note 3 will be good but Note 4 will be even better. I don't think it will be better than an iPad mini or 9.7" iPad.

A phablet can never replace an iPad/any tablet. Utopia. Drop that thought.

For me the phablet format is perfect for reading, and I've done tons and tons of reading on my Note 2. The screen is big enough that I can rest my hands on my lap while sitting on the metro etc., and read very well at that distance. At night I rest my elbows on the mattress and hold the phone in landscape mode, also very comfy for longer reading sessions.

I've tried going back to reading on tablets but I really prefer the phablet. Even an iPad mini is a lot heavier and much more uncomfortable to hold for longer periods of time. With a phablet you lose some screen real estate - but it is so, so much nicer to hold for a long time. A phablet is also easier to always bring with you. You might even apply the old camera saying here: "The best ebook is the one you have with you!" I find that I'm reading more since getting my Note 2.

Also I find the 5.5"-6" screen size a very natural size for reading in terms of how iong the rows are. It is similar to reading a normal paperback, whereas with a tablet it's more like reading a cumbersome, big book.

For late night reading I find that the minimum brightness of the screen is very important. A bright screen disturbs others in the room and really hurts the eyes after a while. Here my Note 2 was better than any iOS device I've tested so far, because Android has apps that let you lower the brightness further than the phone does in itself. The Note 4 also supposedly has a very low minimum brightness point.

Yesterday I tested the 6 Plus and reading quality on it was one of the main things I was looking at. Here I found that iBooks would split the text into two rows in landscape mode which was very bad. Essentially then you get two iPhone 4 reading screens next to each other....this didn't work at all for me. But there might be a setting to change this that I didn't find.

For the best reading experience right now I would definitely recommend a phablet. Of the phones you mention, I would clearly hold the Note 3 over the G3. Both screens are sharp enough but the extra length of the Note 3 actually makes it more comfortable to hold for longer durations - in landscape mode it makes for a more natural double handed grip, and in portrait mode you bury less of the screen with the ball of your hand and don't risk touching the onscreen buttons. The G3 is also known to have some graphics issue with text.

The only phone I can see possibly dethroning the current Note 4 or iPhone 6 Plus in terms of reading would be the upcoming Nexus 6. A slightly larger screen while retaining more or less the same footprint might be even more perfect for reading.

I find the G3 to get just fine for reading text. I base this on actually owning a G3 instead if looking at a picture on the internet.

That being said, I prefer reading on at least an iPad mini size screen. The extra size helps.

IMO nothing beats a Kindle Paperwhite. Use one and you'll never read a book on an iPad again.

Back to your question, you'll likely go to the iPad vs Phablet. If you're on an airline and making a brief trip YMMV. There I've done both but it's really a matter of my not wanting to carry or pull out multiple devices.

Just got a Paperwhite yesterday and couldnt agree more. Got it for a good used price but its basically brand new. I wanted to defy my own suspicions of buying a dedicated reader but it makes such a difference.
Especially out on the patio during the day, unmatched.

Worth the going rate and the battery is insane.

The Paperwhite is a great device. I highly recommend it.

Oh wow this thing isn't half as expensive as I thought! Will go have a look at one. I do love reading on my Note but maybe this is way better.

I was just thinking about this thing with how touch screens will evolve now that we've basically already reached the maximum resolution anyone will ever need. One awesome step would be if screens could switch into a reading mode which was just like those Kindle screens!

I was skeptical in buying a dedicated device just to read as I am a phablet lover but it makes a world of difference on the eyes and readability.

I am a Prime member and love the ease of inclusion for the free books and the lending library as well.

They are releasing a new one soon so you can possibly find my current model (last years) for a good price if you search. I got lucky and found one in the marketplace from a great seller with a case.

No it's not. The oversharpening doesn't even happen except in some very rare instances, and even when it does, it doesn't look bad. I would prefer it not to have oversharpening of course, but just look at professional G3 reviews. Almost nobody even mentions the oversharpening, because it's just not an issue. Only a few overly critical youtubers have blown it out of proportion and act like it destroys the screen.

I say this as a G3 owner as well. Excellent phone.

However, I would still prefer to read on at least a 7 inch tablet. But if you must, reading in this phone isn't bad either.

While I agree with you to an extent, I have used the device and am very sensitive to software "enhanced" screens which is why I was so turned off from the sharpening feature. Some may like it.

Reading on a Note 3 is VERY nice, but the caveat IMO is to have a black background such as Kindle offers. The N3 is much too bright, even at a low setting and really tires the eye after a while. This may be me though, as I really find any electronic device too bright right before bed.

On a side note I do prefer my surface tablet to read mainly because I have f.lux installed on it and it helps me to not become wired when using my tablet before bed. I think there may be some android alternatives but I never researched it.

I use Screen Filter for my Note 2. This is one app that really showed me the beauty of Android when I found it. I have NovaPrime set up so that I can activate the app by pinching in on the home screen to activate/deactivate it. It's a must have for late night use really.

Wow very nice, thanks. I'm still looking for a f.lux alternative though, it changes light temperature to better help you fall asleep, it doesn't really help with dimness.

Np! True, an f.lux alternative for Android would be awesome. But I've found that actually Screen Filter goes quite a long way as it is. I couldn't live without f.lux for my MPB, but using my phone before going to sleep has been totally OK with just this app. Then of course the Note 2 has quite a warm white point (looks quite yellow next to my gf's Z3 lol), so it might not suffice for other devices.
