hi.. anyone knows something about how sales are going for the apple tv? I got the feeling that no news arent good news in this case..

"Good" is all relative. It took Apple a year and a half to sell a million iPods (introduced October 2001, one million sold announcement at WWDC in June 2003). Now they sell two or three times that many in a week.

That doesn't mean that the Apple TV will follow the same path, but it does mean that it's far, far too early to make any calls about success.

that is right, but i think we can safely asume it is not skyrocketing through the roof by now..

I think sales will start out slow and as itunes gets more movies and tv shows and after people see what it can do sales will start to increase.

I still think the missing link is some way of having a larger library available without having a computer on and running iTunes.

I'm almost tempted to buy a second :apple:TV, hack it to run iTunes and put my library on that.

Wish they had made the Airport Disk feature of the Airport Extreme's useful as a server for :apple:TV.

FWIW, now that I've "fixed" my wireless LAN issues, the :apple:TV is more responsive, movie trailers don't sip and streaming "just works" again. I'm still planning on connecting the :apple:TV, iMac and Wii with a wired connection and connecting that to the wireless LAN.

I'm disappointed that :apple:TV won't run on anything other than a widescreen TV. I would have it right now if it weren't for that major drawback.

Lack of features isn't what's stopping AppleTV from selling a gazillion models right now. There's just not enough buzz about it. They're still getting started - compare it to, say, video iPods. Most people said they had no need of one, and many still don't have it. But eventually they became the thing to have, and they're selling in very, very comfortable numbers right now.

Since Apple (wisely) never gave a target for early sales, I'm not even sure what number would be good or bad at this point. 10,000? 15,000? Apple clearly don't expect iPod-like figures; for one thing, it's a one-per-household item, and kids won't be running out to replace them with every revision.

Ditto. I'd love to have a central media server in the attic/basement somewhere that all the media devices (Apple TV, Xbox 360 etc; maybe even phones with WiFi) can access; rather than being tied into a one company solution.

Some of the newer NAS (Network Area Storage) devices have built in iTunes broadcast ability, so you can keep your content on the storage device without having to keep your computer up. I don't know if it can handle the streaming part though. I think right now its just an external library.

I was thinking about putting up an NAS in my Attic (where my router is anyway) and having all my media on that shared by everything in the house.
