It seems that with the solid bottom of the new keyboard folio, the new iPad pro should be easier to use on the lap similar to a real laptop. What is your experience: sitting, lying on a couch etc?

The old iPad pro is quite poor to use on a lap with the ASK, so I hope for some improvement.

It’s very good. Other than the limited screen angles, it’s extremely stable. Much more so than the previous version.

I have 11-inch IPP with keyboard folio, and the experience has been great so far - very stable, just like a laptop. There are only two angles, but they work great for me. Haven’t tried 12.9-inch keyboard folio outside of Apple Store, so can’t comment on that one, but it should be equally good or even better for lap use.

It's pretty good; it's a little more wobbly when typing when in the more upright position compared to the angled stance, but otherwise it's stable. Due to the new folio design (non-folding keyboard with full-back support) it's a lot more stable than the old ASK, and you can actually pick up the entire device by the keyboard without it feeling wobbly or it's going to break.

I never really had a problem with the older gen 12.9 on my lap, but the new 11 inch is even better.

I have to say, I don’t like the added weight from the new keyboard folio, compared to the previous ASK. I never felt I needed backside protection. But if it makes the iPad more stable on the lap, it might be worth the trade off.

Yup, the experience is much improved with a solid bottom frame. It is still top heavy.

Great Q, im also interested, been today on the Apple Store trying it and i think it can be a phenomenal tool for working on the couch ‍♂️

I didn’t get the keyboard folio for my 11” iPad, but my girlfriend has it, and I have to say, it’s very solid in the lap. Nice sturdy base.

My 12.9 and keyboard folio feel awesome. I think the bigger footprint helps quite a bit, stabilization-wise.

Yes, this is a question you cannot get answered by trying in the Apple store. Only other users can answer.

i agree with the above comments in that it gets a bit wobbly in the fully upright position, but it is relatively stable on the lap.

The keyboard is growing on me despite the back cover not being made of anything resembling premium material and the high price. I'm buying a skin for the back, so hopefully that helps with the look of it a bit.

Now I the 11” pro with the keyboard folio, so I can answer my own question: yes, it’s much better on the lap. You can even lie down on a couch and use it with the legs propped up. In that sense, the new pro is much more of a “laptop replacement” than the previous pro. It’s still not as good as a real laptop, but it’s getting close, and much better than a surface pro.

The downside is that the iPad + Keyboard Folio feels much heavier than my previous 9.7” + ASK. With the ASK attached, I could comfortably hold the 9.7 in one hand. The new iPad Pro + Keyboard Folio gets just above the limit where it’s comfortable.

On balance, I think the trade off is worth it.
