My fathers business needs dsl but no one services his area and we finally found some AT&T iDSL service at 145kb/s up and 145 kp/s down @ $99.99 a month + $150 installation charge. How is this speed? We have 3mb/s at home but this is the fastest we can find. What do you guys think? A 1 yr contract is required as well.

145kb/s download, that's horrible, it's only about two and a half times faster than dialup (56kb/s). Definitely not worth $99 a month

well hes not gonna be downloading anything really. just insurance eligibility and billing etc.

Some companies charge more just because its a "business" account. Verizon tried this on my dad's small business. He told them fine turn it off and they said... well... we can give you the regular price.

And at that price there's no way you should pay an installation fee.

definitely not. I get commercial T1 service for that price, and theres no installation costs.

if theres other companies available in the area that offers service, give them a call. if not and AT&T holds exclusive in your fathers building, then you're outta luck. only think I can think of is call them nicely and see if your lucky enough to land yourself on a friendly customer rep.

are you sure there aren't any typos???

if you're out of DSL coverage area, well, of course it's gonna be slow and costly.

you don't happen to live in the middle of nowhere do you ???

Damn i dont know wtf to do. We NEED internet there. Its in a well developed area, but the building was built like 20 years ago so maybe no wiring? How much is t1? the last t1 guy we consulted only had a package for like $400 a month

that might include installation, since you said the building is quite old. T1 services range from $99-$300 a month depending on your service/contract. but often if your T1 provider is a small/independent seller, you can usually talk down the price with them. a full T1 line is 1.5Mbps, and i doubt your dad needs that for email and web use. see if they can offer to sell you a quarter of that bandwidth (around 768kbps) and that should keep costs down a little.

How does the T1 Work? 100 bucks a month is fine if the speeds are decent. 150kp is a joke. Can you recommend me any t1 websites?

they usually have T1 switches/hubs in most commercial/business locations setup already for service. all they have to do is hookup some CAT cables to your dad's office and off to the web you go. T1 service depends on your location, so just google T1 in your area.

All the T1 I can find is like 3-400 a month on google.

Look at the some of the EVDO offerings from Sprint and Verizon, for high speed wireless access.

Look to see if your area is covered by any of these carries, around $60/month.

Downspeed can range from 600-1400kbps and upload speeds from 350-500kbps.

When I ran test on Speakeasy, with full EVDO coverage, 1200kbps down, and 425kbps up.

T1 pricing various per region, but you are looking at about $300/month on average.

Ouch, your pricing is so high in the US.

In France, you get 8mps (at least, could go up to 20mps in big cities) for 40 bucks.

Could you tether the computer to a mobile phone with a data plan? Surely that would be cheaper (and at least as fast).

I have 100 mbps down and 10 mbps up for 320 sek / month or equivalent of 46 dollar.

No sign up fee ;/
