After many years, we finally saw a foldable phone (in NA, anyway) that uses the exact same screen dimensions for it's cover display as the screen on the normal slab phone from the same manufacturer, namely in the form of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold from Google. With this milestone finally being achieved, how likely do you think a folding phone with the same cover screen dimensions as the large slab flagship phone from the same manufacturer is, or just around the size of the larger phones we have now?

Personally, my experience with foldables has been that I end up doing most things on the cover display, and only end up opening the inner display for videos, scans or documents that were clearly meant for A4 paper, or websites that just fail to load with a mobile browser or need a more desktop like area to be usable. While many would say that at that point, a foldable may not be for me, seeing how low the value proposition drops, I disagree: the use I get out of the inside screen and the significance of the degree of improvement it brings to the tasks it improves makes it worthwhile to me.

The deficiency in foldables for me really is almost exclusively in the outer screen and in how it's smaller than the screen of my current phone. So for me, a foldable that has an outer screen that's closer to my iPhone 14 Pro Max would be ideal… like the current Pixel 9 Pro XL as opposed to the Pixel 9 Pro whose screen size the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's cover screen currently shares. It would be something like a "Pixel 10 Pro XL Fold." Is this a likely thing to look out for in the next couple of years, or is this whole idea just ridiculous (phone would be way too heavy, etc)?

Don't think it's going to happen anytime soon. XL sized phones like the iPhone 16 PM, Pixel 9 Pro XL or Galaxy S24 Ultra are already pushing the limits for easy of portability and a foldable with those screen sizes will be even bigger, especially in thickness. The current crop of foldable are satisfying the need for both a good sized exterior screen AND offering a much larger second screen option, a screen significantly bigger than those slab XL sizes.

I get how you feel the 6.3" outer display on the 9 Pro Fold feels smaller than what you're used to be in any other context, it's pretty damn big--bigger than most smartphones of the past and everything except the handful of XL sized displays. A 6.3" display WAS a huge display not too long ago.

Not saying it'll never happen but I'd wager we'll see more variants similar to Huawei's recent dual folding (hate that people call it a trim-fold as it only folds twice ;)) that converts a standard size screen into a 10"+ full size tablet before larger single folding devices.

techinally it's already happening.

vivo fold has ultra level hardware in a foldable camera wise at least.

US based phones no i don't see it happening anytime soon. Generally apple, samsung, google are very lazy when it comes to improving hardware based features.
