It took much longer before a pure software SIM hack arrived. I used a custom SIM card in late August 2007 because there was no software SIM unlock. I think the software unlock came in late September.

Yeah, remember the days you had to physically cut your SIM card and stick it onto another card? Turbo SIM or something? That sure was the dark ages of iPhone unlocking.
 
It took me about 2 and a half months to get it unlocked.

I got the 1.1.2 version with bootloader 4.6... (the good old days, now all in memory).

the unlock was brought out in February (if I can remember correctly). the actual process of unlocking took about 10 minutes. then came 1.1.3 which you had to do it through a "software update" in installer. 1.1.4 was easier with all the computer-based programmes doing the clicking & unlocking.
