Almost 3 hours ago I started the process of upgrading my unlocked 1.1.2 iPhone to 1.1.3 using the official soft upgrade. I wasn't expecting it to be quick (the iClarified tutorial says ~20 minutes) but I'm starting to worry.

Does it really take this long? Is there anything I can do that won't result in a bricked iPhone?

It's been at the stage of "Updating and Jailbreaking to 1.1.3" for pretty much the whole time.

You can start worrying any time you like, but now would seem as good a time as any!

In your shoes, I'd probably put it in DFU, downgrade to 1.1.1 and start again. Sorry to bear bad news, but...

I would use the definitive jailbreak guide instead of one of those soft upgrade things. It will actually show you the current progress so you know when it locks up.

Well I never. I forced a reboot and was greeted with a lovely "edit home screen" message. What's more, it's still unlocked when I'd upgraded.

Personally, I would restore and use ZiPhone to jailbreak, activate, and unlock your phone just with 3 letters typed into a command prompt.

True ziphone can only unlock 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 otb iphones but if you have say 1.1.3 iphone just run:

ziphone -a -j

This will activate and jailbreak your iphone assuming you have BL 3.9 Then reboot the phone, install BSD 2.1 from installers, put the iphone in airplane mode and autolock to never. Now you can run anysim which the ziphone nicely installed on the springboard of your iphone. I did this last night with a 1.1.1 iphone unlocked with anysim 1.1 I restored to 1.1.3 using itunes then did the above steps and am now fully unlocked on 1.1.3 and couldnt be happier :)
