Because Apple sees it as a hobby, there probably won't be any lines at all. There isn't the big marketing push like the iPhone or the iPhone or even new iPods.

It will sell better than the previous model I think (better price point) but it's not going to be some huge "wait in line" kind of release.

How long do you think the Apple Store lines for the new Apple TV are going to be on release day?

I'm saying minimal.

The new Apple TV will almost certainly be a bigger seller than the old version, but it won't move as many units as the iPhone.

Plus, there's no activation malarky to go through like with the iPhone so the purchase process moves much faster.

Well teh rumor mill suggests that even Steve himself is not sure this going to be the success or not. I think he has actually be quoted as saying that the time isn't quite right yet for the "revolution" in the living room. I guess well just have to keep our iPhone and iPad for our 'revolutions' for the time being.

This thing would be a hit if it just had an app store..

Bingo! If it had an app store things would definitely go crazy. I think there might even be a line to buy them at that point. Right now it's a great device, but it's not quite there yet in terms of the kind of mass appeal that the iPhone and iPad get.

I'd be buying one on day one if there was an app store and an SDK for it.

Imagine the MLB At-Bat app on it? Or the Hulu app. Or AirVideo.

So, do you think it will be safe to show up about an hour before opening to get one? How many do you think they'll get in stock?

Lines? LOLz. Not unless MasterCard or Visa systems go down. :D

Don't you guys see a pattern here? :D
The first iPhone did all the basic and included features. Then the next software version brought an App Store for it. I believe that the Apple TV runs it's own OS and that it will get it's own app store next year (along with a new Apple TV and a software update), or maybe even the year after. These apps will be supported by the A4 chip that Apple snuck into the new Apple TV.

;)

I'd normally be thinking the same thing as all of you. But, I've realized that a lot more people have seemed to be pre-ordering the new Apple TV then we've noticed.

So, I assume there will be a line of at least 5-10 people.

My guess is that you could sleep in, show up three hours after they open and still be okay. I'm not sure if they'll limit stock for launch day, but if you're worried you can always pre-order online. It's not as much of an adventure, but you'll be guaranteed to get one.

If Apple ships like they did the iPhones, there's a chance that you may even get it early (I got my iPhone 4 one day before the official launch).

They offer free shipping on the Apple website--why would you even go to the store for one??

In the end, I've decided that I'll just show up a bit early to the store on release day and get one. I don't expect there to be any major lines at all.

Heck, I'd say just be sure to stop in 10 minutes before they close and you'll get one. I'm a fan of the :apple:TV but this is a total non-event--there will not be any lines at all for this. Just don't forget to go to the store that day and you'll walk out with one.

Be sure to report back on how you like it!

I haven't decided whether or not to get one yet. I'll probably decide after it comes out and I have a chance to play with it and make sure it still accomplishes all the things I liked about the old Apple TV and then some.

Err..probably a silly question but when is the actual release date? the online store says "ships September" and wiki says 1st September.
Has it been released then? I have not been into a store during this time to check and would have thought the online store would have changed to "Ships: Within 24hrs"?

Who care?

Mines shipping to my door. I will never stand in line again at an apple store. This past summer was my first and last time. I'm ashamed to even admit I stood in line for 5 hours for a phone.

Lol people lining up for Apple TV? HAHAHA. This thing is nothing like the iPhone or iPad. I'm just glad everybody stopped calling it the iTV. That was ridiculous and stupid. While Bluray is around, the apple TV will remain a hobby.
