How many seconds from hitting the keyboard until the login screen/desktop appears?

More or less the same time as it takes me to open the lid, so maybe a second or so?
That’s interesting. I was wondering if the laptops and iMacs would be faster than the Mini, which for me, takes 3-4 seconds to wake. I wondered if it was related to some energy-saving process, or if it was dependent on the particular monitor used, or what exactly was causing the delay. I saw another thread that claimed the cable used was relevant.

My MacBook Pro is instantaneous. The mini takes some time - the keyboard takes a moment to wakeup and the monitor can take a few moments to wake up. I changed the monitor to specify the port specifically instead of hunting for an active signal and this has helped a lot. These are issues with PCs in general; not specific to M1 or Macs.

How do you specify a port?

It's different for every monitor. There are typically a lot of settings in modern monitors and they affect stuff like contrast, brightness, power to the USB-C port, power to the USB ports, whether to leave USB power on when there's not signal, and so on.

Just tested on my M1 Max 14":
1) Went to Apple -> Sleep without shutting lid.
2) Walked away for a few minutes
3) Hit space bar

I would estimate about a half a second for the login screen to appear.

I connected an external HDMI display. The internal display continues to come up in less than a second, but the external display is blank between 2.7 seconds and 8 seconds (inconsistent).

There may be some power management settings in your monitor menu that leave the display in a semi-on state all the time (consuming power but reducing start time). Otherwise it's going to take a few seconds for the display circuitry to power up and sync to the display signal. The internal display is optimized for a single signal so does not have to go through these steps.

I've got the 14" MBP connected to two external monitors — the internal screen wakes instantly. The monitors take a few seconds to come alive and figure out their lives.

As others have said, I suspect your mini is waking instantly, but your monitor is taking a few seconds to figure out its life.

It's not unusual for an external monitor to take seconds to wake. I bet the mini itself is almost instantaneous...
My M1 MacBook Air takes several seconds to turn on the external 4K display when I'm in clamshell mode. But if I just open the notebook, turning on the internal display is nearly instantaneous.

It’s instant. I’d have to measure it in microseconds.

For the external display, it takes a couple seconds.

Same here, even down to the M1 MBA.

Wake is instantaneous but startup takes a bit especially with FileVault.

These devices are designed to be always on, so startup time is not an optimization priority. Not to mention that this is real startup and not the hybrid hibernation Windows is boasting as “quick startup”.

It's usually woken before i've even lifted the screen to a usable angle. Wish the Intel PoS would be that fast.
My previous MBP16 (i9) would take about 8-12 seconds to come up with the login prompt, which seemed like an eternity after using the M1 and M1X Macs, which are near instantaneous

And sometimes the external display turns off and on a couple of times. Annoying but not a big problem since it always eventually stays on. It didn’t used to but with some version of Big Sur it stopped doing the turn on then go to sleep and never wake again without pulling the USB-C cable.

The M1Max wakes up instantaneously - for example if I have an Apple Watch, it unlocks faster as well.

However when connected to external displays in clamshell mode, via a TB3 dock - it’s a disaster. The watch shows the laptop unlocking repeatedly but fails to wake up the displays. I have to unplug/re-plug the TB3 cable and some times the laptop will spontaneously reboot as a result. As much as I love the speed and absence of fan noise - I absolutely hate the cluster-f that wake-n-sleep is on the new M1
