8 hours later, it shows 97%.

OP, make sure you didn't get your iPhone (if any) charger mixed up with your iPad one.

I used a USB extension cable. That could make the difference I guess, but it's always worked fine with my iPhone and others.
I definitely used the 10w A/C charger for the iPad though.
I'll try it next time without the extension and see how it goes.

USB charging is not recommended as most USB ports do not put out enough juice for the iPad to charge quickly. You'll be charging all day and night with USB.
The included iPad power supply/charger is rated much higher than the iPhone charger. My iPad usually gets a full charge in about 3.5 to 4 hours from an almost empty battery.

Just to clarify, I was off the iPad power supply/charger. (the 10w ac charger)
I just had an extension between the 3' sync cable and the charger itself.
I bet that was the reason.
Was any of the wiring warm/hot to the touch? I'd think there'd have to be some serious resistance in the extension wire if it caused your charging time to double. That means 4 hours of 2.1A was dissipated as heat. Seems like that much heat could cause a fire.
Good point! No, it wasn't hot.
I also sort of wonder if it was the battery gauge. I unplugged it. Removed the extension cable, then plugged it in, and it was at 100% within a minute or so.
