Boot-up: 33 secs

Is this normal? (2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo)

I got my new iMac over a week ago. After Tuesday i noticed it was taking slightly longer to shutdown and boot-up. That day i did a Software Update and installed Roxio Toast.

I've never owned a Mac previously, so i wouldn't know how long it would normally take.

How long does your iMac take?

iMac 2.8ghz 4gig ram....(its my dads)

Yup it's normal.

Windows is more like 2x, than 3x, then 4x the time required on the mac.

I'm not timing my startups, because numbers are going to differ depending on what is in your account login preferences.

The numbers you give roughly tally, though it feels quicker than this to me. Maybe it's because I have 4GB of RAM.

Isn't the fast booting time of the new Macs mostly due to EFI?

My iMac takes significantly longer to begin to load an OS than does my work laptop from 2004, my personal laptop from 2006, and my brand new HTPC. All are Intel-based systems with traditional PC BIOSes.

Only my server takes longer, and it's actually based on an Intel board that features EFI (and has a lot more devices than the iMac to boot from)

OS X tends to boot faster than Windows and with Leopard also resumes from suspend faster.

I went from a Gateway, 1.6ghz P4 with 1.5GB RAM running Windows XP. It took forever for it to boot up, seriously 4 minutes, maybe 5 I never sat there and timed it but it took a long @$$ time. Then again it was 5 years old too.
My new iMac is blazing fast in comparison. i love it.

Boot-up: 31 secs
Restart: 35 secs
Shutdown: 7-10 secs

iMac 2.8ghz 4gig ram

It takes me a full minute to boot up my iMac.

I think it's because of my 2 external WD my book hard drives?
Plus I'm using a logitech dinovo edge keyboard and logitech MX mouse

Seems that

For my white pre-santa rosa iMac which has a max usable RAM limit of 3gb, if 4gb of ram is installed, it takes longer to start up (double or triple the time). If it's 3gb of ram, it does not noticeably change start up time.

Same 4gb of ram in a Santa Rosa MBP does not noticeably alter start up time. (non measured)

wow, my startup is 23 secs, and i have an external drive plugged in, and i have 53 gigs of the HD used

oops, misread, 33 secs to startup, i have 2 accounts, its set to automatically log into one of them, 5 secs to shut down, i didnt time a restart

Mine is pretty speedy:

Startup: 23.7 seconds
Restart: about 30 seconds
Shutdown: 4.9 seconds

Timed on the ol' iPod touch.

ok here is mine...

Boot: 27.89 seconds
Restart: 31.46 seconds
Shutdown: 4.82 seconds

and idk why restart is longer than startup, anyway here is my specs

iMac 24' (White) - Mac OS X 10.5.1
2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo
2X1 GB Kingston Ram
250 GB HDD - (87 gb free)
Logitech MX Revolution mouse and logitech software

Usually about 2.5 minutes to boot, ha ha just kidding thats about how long it takes for a typical windows users machine to boot, ZING.

Mine is about the same times as above.

20 sec without connected fw external drive, 30 sec with
imac 2,4 / 4gb
