i dont know if that's normal but my mba m1 takes some good 5 seconds to wake up the monitor ,a lg ul650 (the mac itself wakes up instantly ofc)

do you have the same behavior on your end ?

It all depends on cables used! It still amazes me even today many users don't seem to know how to use even the older HDMI spec and still try to use older HDMI cables for newer 4k or 5k monitors and not there HDMI high speed cable specs!

hmmm I use satechi hub (with 2 USB-a and one HDMI ) with a HDMI 2.0 cable and port , otherwise I wouldn't be able to get 4k60 would I?

When I plug in an external monitor to my 14" MBP, sometimes the external monitor would flicker quite a few times (just the backlight turning on and off) before the screen is ready to use. Meanwhile, the cursor and desktops may have already moved to the blank monitor which can be confusing. I used to unplug-and-plug but soon learned that patience is all it takes. All the while the 14" display never flickered.

This was quite different from Intel Macs where both the Mac and external monitor would flicker, and sometimes did require a few tries of unplug-and-plug.

Had a 2017 MBP and moved to M1 MBA.

Same P3221D Dell USB-C monitor. Identical wake times, which is instant.
if you dont mind showing me,id be intersted to have a video where you open the mac/wake it from sleep via power button, and see just how quick it is,thanks :)

Mr. Too Many Exclamation Marks is barking up the wrong tree, this shouldn't be influenced by the cable much (if at all).

The 5 second delay is most likely a negotiation process between the monitor and computer. I don't know whether this is faster on Intel Macs with the same monitor.
dude maybe you may know about this, cuz THAT is annoying me much more

i dont think it used to happen previously

btw i have no lessons to give you my man,but as this is my thread i should point out that the way you called him is pretty patronizing, and while i laughed at your comment ,i think i would have been upset, had it happened to me :)

just saying

I think more than the duration- it’s the reliability. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/how-long-does-your-arm-mac-take-to-wake.2334836/post-30861056

For some reason the M1x laptops aren’t as reliable as the Intel ones when waking up external monitors. The laptops themselves wake up pretty much instantly. But they seem to have trouble with USB-C and DisplayPort connections when the monitors are sleeping. The recent MacOS updates haven’t solved the problem or mitigated it. I’m still hopeful that this is a software issue and easy to fix …

I do wish Apple made their own TB4 dock so that it would be plug-n-play and work seamlessly. Rumors are that they are making cheaper (well compared to the Pro Display XDR 32”) displays so that might be another option

It’s honestly annoying, every day mashing the space bar or clicking the mouse a dozen times so the computer wakes

10 months later and I still have this problem. I use an MBP 16" with the M1 Max chip and it takes a few seconds for my external monitors to wake up.
So, so annoying

Few seconds would be awesome - I wouldn't complain. It used to take a minute or so with a 2021 64GB MBP and MacOS 12. Under MacOS 13 - the same MBP doesn't ever wake up the monitor after sleeping, unless it is rebooted :)

If it was a cheap Samsung monitor, I would say it's a bulged $2 capacitor. Thousands of them died for the same constructional flaw. You could repair them yourself, but most went into the landfill, when the monitor wakeup time took longer and longer.

I'm having this issue too with an LG monitor and an M2 Pro MBP.

If I connect the monitor to the HDMI port (instead of a TB dock) the time is reduced but it's still quite annoying. But now I need to have two cables connected to the MBP and the whole idea of having a TB dock was to not need more cables ugh.

A good reason to have a laptop and a desktop.
