How long till search engines see...

Did a web site for a client, went live last week. He keeps calling every other day saying "How come my site doesn't show up on Google?" What are some answers besides the one I told him – "It takes time, you're the new kid on the block." Also besides the META words, ALT text and content of site, what other things should I consider for search engines.
