I have an iPhone 3G with around 12GB on it (lots of music :D) and around 50 apps which today decided to experience the stop running apps and loose all media problem. Step one is to try to do a restore in iTunes. One small problem. I kicked off that restore 3.5 hours ago and it is still running! The backup was performed just yesterday, and the apps were working this morning, so I know that the problem hadn't presented until after the backup. Backups usually take me around 30-45 minutes.

What is the average time others have seen for doing a restore? I'm concerned that it blew up and is just spinning wheels now.

when i did my restore it took almost 4 hours, ...

i dont know what changes these times (ex: processor speed, data on phone,)

but yeah it takes FOR-EV-ER... :-/

one reason why i havent pwnd the newest firmware available for the phone :p

:apple:

Wow! That must be some strange logic they use in their backup and restore process when it takes four hours to copy less than 16GB to a device. Well, guess I'll sleep on it and see if I have a working phone again tomorrow.

Hopefully Apple fixes this licensing bug really soon. It looks like quite a few people have had this problem with apps not working and media disappearing.

Thanks for the info.

I'm waiting on a restore right now. My phone froze on the apple screen while syncing and has been restoring now for at least a couple of hours. The progress bar on my comp has been right at the end for over 40 minutes now. Hopefully it is able to restore. I really don't have the time to do this and being without a phone all night doesn't help.

The solution to get my apps working again and for my music and videos to appear again on my iPhone 3G was to go back to using iTunes 7.7.0 and resyncing my apps. See my post here for the steps I took...

You can restore and restore over and over again, but I think unless you downgrade to iTunes 7.7.0 (7.7.1 seems to cause the issues) then you are just going to keep having this problem until Apple comes out with a permanent fix.

Finally fixed

It took two days but I didn't manage to fix the phone without downgrading iTunes. After doing the restore, which didn't help, I let iTunes set the phone up as a new phone to get out of a restore loop I had become trapped in. Interestingly, even with doing the setup as a new phone all of my mail settings and non-synced info was still present.

After setting up the phone as a new phone, I selected options to not put any music or apps on the phone. At this point I also deleted the apps out of iTunes. With the phone now having no licensed media, I set the music to sync up again. After this the library had all of my media available again.

With media taken care of I turned attention to the apps. I downloaded each app I wanted again and let them sync up to the phone. After this the apps worked again, but any app specific data was lost. I had to go through the setup procedures for any apps requiring customization or login information again.

After doing all this the phone is finally back to a fully working state. Hopefully, this flaw doesn't present again until after Apple gets a fix out. It took me two days (due to the four hour restore time) and a lot of researching to find all the pieces needed to put this puzzle back together.

Thanks to those who offered up information here.
