My M1 iPad Pro 11" screen suddenly stopped working after 2 months. So I took it to the Genius Bar and they could not get it to work either. Power was going in but the screen was just black. I was told it needs to be replaced but they have none in stock so it might take a few days... then to take my non working one home and when I get a call bring it in and they will swap it over.

I guess this is no stock of refurbished models? Has anyone experienced this, how long does this usually take?

Under normal circumstances a few days, just as the 'genius' said.

He mentioned a "shortage of supplies with whats going on".... I don't know what he was referring to. I only wondered as in the past when I have had iPhones and AirPod Pros replaced its been instant.

Yes, that is why I said 'Under normal circumstances'. 'Shortage of supplies' can be interpreted in difference ways:
Scenario 1): Because of the shortage the Apple Store does not have it in stock and has to order it with the central storage. If it is in stock in the central storage it will take a few days.
Scenario 2): If it is not in stock in the central storage it has to come from somewhere else (further away or other parts of the world).

Hope for scenario 1 and if it takes more than a 'few' days (say 4 or 5) contact the Apple store, tell them you are waiting for a few days now and ask for an indication how long it will take.

Under scenario 2 your guess is as good as mine. It still can take a few days if you are lucky, but it also can take a few weeks if you are unlucky. No one on this forum can tell you how long because it depends entirely on your circumstances, but maybe the Apple store can.

They ususally keep spares around for these situations. But with the shortages...

Well, yeah.. in past we were able to get replacements instantaneously. However, was this particular past before COVID?

In these circumstances, and Apple have 'no stock', you should be able to get one from Amazon or elsewhere and Apple reimburse you.....;)
But that's not going to happen.

Apple doesn’t give you a new model it’s a refurbished and then there’s obviously a multitude of other reasons as you alluded to.

Are there known shortages?
Yes, there are widespread component shortages in the tech industry right now. It's affecting all kinds of things including cars and appliances.

My daugher's car died around Thanksgiving (2017 Chevy Volt). Took three months to get the part necessary. Fortunately she's a college student and could live without a car for that long, but it was very frustrating. Even called GM customer support. They were good about checking in with me once a week, but there wasn't much to be done but wait.

I would refuse this (unless it comes with some upgrades), and get a NEW one from Amazon etc.
You should be receiving a new replacement.

The original bought one is not even 2 months old! Do you think it is fair to have that replaced with a used/second hand/refurbished one?
Don't answer that. It is a rhetorical question 😉
