Right now I can send my Ipad Air 2 to Apple for a battery "replacement".

My battery life aint what it used to be but I can still get by. Im worried about Apple dropping support unexpectedly if I wait too long to send it in. $99 isn't too outrageous to get a new battery IMO.

Where would I look for warnings that support is ending soon? For example, its just a rumor I think, but there was talk of IOS 13 dropping support for the IPad Air 2. That might not be the same as repair support but still I worry the device is about to be made obsolete.
 
They'll still repair the device for awhile after support is dropped for the latest version of iOS. And they'll make public that they're dropping support for repairs before they actually do it. Just wait until the battery gets real bad or they announce a firm date and have the battery replaced then.
 
Repair support isn’t the same as iOS support. I would guess that the eligible models are those listed against Out of Warranty costs and AppleCare+ Excesses in the general repairs area, which include the iPad 2 and the iPad 4 which were discontinued in 2014, and the iPad Mini, discontinued in 2015. The Mini and iPad 2 are stuck all the way back on iOS 9 and the iPad 4 on iOS 10. I think repairs are supported for a certain length of time after the iPad was discontinued, but I’m not sure how long it is. It must be 6 years maximum as the iPad 3, discontinued late 2012, doesn’t seem to be on the list.

I would not worry until the iPad Air, discontinued a year before the Air 2, falls off of the list.

I very much doubt that the Air 2 will be dropped in iOS 13. The Air will go first on an A7 and 1GB RAM. There’s no certainty that the A8X of the Air 2 will get any more iOS support than the less powerful A8 Mini 4 (both 2GB RAM) but I can’t see A7 and A8X devices being dropped at the same time.
 
My guess is they offer repairs up to 5 years after they stopped selling the device.
 
Were you able to convince Apple to repair your battery (paid service) by claiming that the "battery life isn't what it used to be"? Or did Apple do their own diagnostic utility and refuse to perform the service in the hopes of running out the clock on their repair window and force you to buy a new device?
 
iPad Air 2 was discontinued on 21st March 2017.

Apple supports their products for 5 years before they become vintage and lose support. If you're at a CA or Turkey store, you get support for 7 years.

So tentatively they will discontinue support in early 2022.

I guess you should update the battery now. Because:

1. It will make a world of difference.

2. In another year or two you'd probably upgrade anyway and/or need another battery replacement yet again, should you wish to keep the Air 2.

P.S. If you want to get service in CA or Turkey, you have till early 2024.
 
I don’t think it can be 5 years exactly as the iPad 2 would have been taken off in March if that were the case. Unless they are giving that one longer because of the sheer number sold (it was on the market for 3 years) or running to the end of the calendar year in which the 5 year mark is reached.

It is exactly five years. Take or give a few days.

iPad 2 was discontinued on 18th March 2014.

That’s why it became vintage in March 2019.
