I just did the dosdude Catalina patch on my late 2011 13 inch MacBook Pro that has the 2.4 i5, 8g of ram and a 500g hd, it works awesome, and I have heard that a few people using the patch have gotten the Big Sur update notice, just did mine yesterday so haven't seen it yet, and not sure if I will, but wondering how long Catalina will be supported?

According to previous cycles, Catalna has one more year of support, dropping off next fall (2022) after the release of iOS13.

Related question - will one still be able to upgrade only to Catalina until then? Or will Apple eliminate the ability to install Catalina on older machines (I'm on Mojave and not sure about making the move yet . . . compatability with some programs)

since Catalina was the last intel supported OSX,  should update security,  programs and safari for a few more years.
not everyone can get the new M1 as soon as they wish,
apple knows Catalina needs to be updated regularly because the delay and shortage of electronics globally.
unless they are heartless and don't care.
