Optical drives tend to be noise things but how loud is to loud? My ibook seems to make a racket at points when burning a disk and when you insert a disk it seems on the verge of making a huge sound but stops. Seems kinda slow too on the last couple of burns however that could have been because I had many applications open.

Optical drives get really damn loud, I probably wouldn't worry. They make way more noise than your typical drive.

Yea they are VERY lod, so don't worry. Much of the noise is when you are inserting, ejecting a disk. When I have my iBook on my lap, I can actually feel something like banging on the bottom of the case when I insert a disc...really loud. It's loud because its a slot load and not a tray.

I think the noise is primarily at accelerated speeds. You shouldn't get much noise if you're *playing* (not ripping) an audio CD or a DVD movie. I think it's just the way the drives are. When you're on a quiet computer, such as a notebook, you can hear it. On a noisy desktop, it's covered up by fan noise and so on, to some extent.

Besides the availability of system resources, burn (or rip) speed will be limited to some extent, I think, by the quality of the disc. If the disc has poor balance, it won't be able to spin fast with stability, and the drive will slow down.
