I only print a select few. I frame mine. Recently put up a collage above my setup:

I print three or four a year but I am starting to think about doing more so I have a physical collection of really important photos as opposed to just digital.

If I recall correctly, printed photos fade over time. And hard disk data degrades over time. As do cassettes, DVDs, just the # of years differ, no real way of permanently preserving things. :-/

I have my parents (and myself) backup everything up to a RAIDed NAS instead and backing up the most important files a second time to an extra hard disk at times. Planning on “refreshing” the data every 10 or so years.

I average one inkjet print weekly and seven or eight silver gelatin prints, with one or two of the silver prints being keepers. I have about twelve prints mounted, matted, framed, and displayed around the house. The rest of the prints are kept in archival boxes. Every year I rotate the prints that are framed. Prints that are framed are typically displayed in small groups, with the images having a common subject or being from the same place.

Other people have had my photos printed, but I've only made occasional 5x7 & 8x10 prints for myself from home.. until last month when I ordered a 3 ft. x 2ft. canvas for my wall that should arrive tomorrow. It's also an acoustic panel so it serves a duel purpose.

I hope I like the print, because there are no refunds and it's too large to keep on the wall if I don't. Fingers crossed Friday the 13th will bring me some good luck!

Just curious, what service did you use for the order? Was it expensive / is it high "res"?
Looking to print some more photographs as well.

I used GIK Acoustics and chose the 3.625 inch thick option. I ordered it August 21 and it shipped on September 10, so it took some time. I guess they're pretty backed up right now. The total cost was $150 + $22 shipping.

My print was from a 42MP camera and about 7950 pixels wide, but I still had to upscale to 10,800 pixels wide if I wanted a 300dpi print. I think Photoshop did a pretty good job with this. Also, in the checkout area there is a notes section where you can specify if you want mirrored edges or blurred edges instead of the image going over the sides. 3.625 is pretty thick so I chose blurred edges.

I'll share a picture of the canvas this weekend if I'm happy with it :)

UPDATE: My canvas/acoustic panel arrived today with black edges instead of blurred. The black would've been fine for this print if the sides weren't damaged and marked up out of the box :( Today they informed me they don't do blurred edges, even though they added the request to my order the day I placed it and emailed after saying, "So nice speaking with you on the phone. We will be sure to use blurred edges on your Art Panel." The details look really good for the size, but the colors are way off. Very disappointing.

I don't print as often as I should. It's usually for other folk who buy a print from me - not that it happens much.

Sorry to hear it didn't come out as expected with border and color issues. That is an interesting product GIK Acoustics has. Never would have thought of sound absorbing material in a framed canvas. Not that often would have the specialized need, but good to know. Were they using standard canvas printing material? Whenever I have a canvas print and wraparound print border, if using my local source, I go into PS and create the border then send that file to the printer what includes boarder, actual size, so they don't duplicate. My other printer site, Fine Arts America, is totally transparent to me and they just send me the money.

My local source is http://www.rt-art.com/index.html and with their wholesale pricing, markup is easy. Their work is absolutely phenominal! If anything, look at their website and contrast with the GIK Acoustic site - totally different focus. Our local photo club switched to them with out competition displaying prints in city hall. While I don't use their drop/ship service as ost out of town orders come through the FAA site, I may in the future as it would support limited edition signed prints that I may market.

The material was a more breathable fabric, and they claim to use a different printing process. The material has to allow for the sound to easliy pass through and be absorbed. My panel 3.625" thick, but the back was mostly hollow with only 1" of insulation behind the print ?

You're right, GIK have a totally different focus. I found them because I'm trying to acoustically treat the room I want the canvas for. I've already made some of my own acoustic panels, but I want the personal touch of a photo. Overall this was a very disappointing experience, but customer service did a good job getting my issue sorted quickly. Because the product was damaged they agreed to a return, emailed me a label, and I shipped it back to them that same day. Had the panel not been damaged I probably would've been out of luck.

I'm going to try some small test fabric prints from Spoonflower next. If it works out I'll make the frame and wrap it myself (likely for a fraction of the price).

Thanks for the link and recommendation! I have another room I want some more standard prints for and I'm keeping them bookmarked!

I've kind of fallen out of that, and only recently, I'm looking to perhaps print out a few and hang them up and/or gift them to family.

Understandable. For incidental, look at places like Adorama. Actually, I use to use Costco until they closed their kiosk in the stores and not all online. That is when I discovered the local source which has pricing similar to Costco and far cheaper than local camera stores (I have two) or art supply store.
