Did I miss this information during the presentation? Is it one with an alternative like the iPhone (so really two)? If so, that stinks. My iPad is used by everyone in my family; my wife, my kids and myself. Touch ID supported 5 fingerprints, so why not support 5 faces?

During one of the hands-on videos, an Apple representative said 2. Maybe this will be extended at a later point in time.

It's a fair point. Face ID will need to match Touch ID in this regard if Apple wants it to be adopted by as many people as possible.

Can only suggest you make some members punch in a passcode or turn it off completely whilst at home.
