Earth (for now)
I'm just curious. How many betas do iOS versions usually have? For some reason, 7 seems like a lot to me. Does anyone have a list of all the beta versions throughout iOS? Wikipedia doesn't seem to document this, to my surprise.

OS 2: 8 betas
OS 3: 5 betas
iOS 4: 4 betas
iOS 5: 7 betas
iOS 6: 4 betas
iOS 7: 6 betas
iOS 8: 5 betas
iOS 9: 5 betas
iOS 10: 8 betas
iOS 11: ???

I've already updated my iPhone 7 Plus and my iPad Air 2 (and my Apple TV), but I'm thinking it may soon be time to update my wife's iPhone 6s and her iPad Air 2 too soon.

It's been annoying not being able to send her HEIC Live Photos.

Can you upload the HEIC Live Photo?

Does a buggy beta necessarily mean that the following release will not be the GM ?

Or are they able to use all the information collected to release a GM even if the previous beta was buggy?

They just release a buggy GM. 10.0.1, 10.0.2, 10.0.3, and 10.1 all came out within 41 days. iOS 9.0.1 came out within a week of 9s release.

That sucks, they should keep it in beta until its ready.

However I can see how the 0.0 release is the largest tested beta. Hopefully all the big bugs will be ironed out, usually I can only resist a couple of days before installing.

To be fair they can't fix EVERY single bug in a .0 release as they still need to load the firmware on the new devices to ship prior to the iOS11 release date.

So fixing everything just isn't possible while shipping the new devices with that firmware.

Id much rather have it that way, release and then patch, then how Android does it and you may not see the update at all until nearly the next version is going into beta

I can save it to a Mac and then send the HEIC just fine, but that's pointless for her since she can't view it anyway on iOS 10. And plus it's a hassle. I prefer just iMessaging the original Live Photo, which I can do to myself on iOS 11 but not to her. She just receives a JPEG still photo through iMessage right now.

Not much of an android defender, but that seems like a completely tangental statement since the delayed android release schedule has absolutely nothing to do with bugs and betas and everything to do with the carrier release model and fragmented market.

Also I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I'm just saying they release it with bugs and hold to a schedule.

No, but can you upload here some sample HEIC files?

Just upload it to some hosting which host just files. I don't want the image hosting to compress it, I want to see the RAW file.

Just use WeTransfer or MyAirBridge or MEGA.

That's what I want to check, because right now, iPhone keeps a PHOTO.JPG and PHOTO.MOV and playbacks it together. So on the disk/filesystem, those are actually two files.

I'll try later.

I'll have to take some pix that aren't of my kids, and I'll have to load up High Sierra at home to do it.

Thanks!

Later sounds funny, as it is almost midnight here. So I guess I will check them tomorrow :)

I was mistaken. I can’t email or upload the entire Live Photo to a hosting site. The HEIC file is only the still image. The movie part gets split out as a .MOV file as soon as I try to save it to the desktop.

BTW, the movie is 1440x1080p HEVC.

HEIC: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=17041760759313161165
MOV: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=06136793832530177319

It seems the framerate fluctuates. In the middle of this mov the frame rate is lower when I say "Why?", so it appears to be jerky. I noticed the same playback behaviour on both my iMac and my iPhone 7 Plus.

So, the best way to send the complete HEIF-based Live Photo is still to use iMessage, but only for people who are running iMessage on iOS 11.

However, I'm not going to update the wife's iDevices just yet. The latest iOS beta in conjunction with the latest Netflix release has introduced a really annoying bug in Netflix.

Thanks. So it looks like they are often GM by about beta 6.

What's the difference what beta # it is? GM for new iOS is based on the date in the year and not on which beta is in existence.

The point is that we are very close to GM now. Don't expect huge changes before the GM. We likely at most have one more beta before the GM, despite the fact we've had weekly betas for the last couple of weeks.

Thank you for the files. So as we can see, it's still impossible to merge it together.

But that's ok, it was like that from the very beginning.

You could also check BURST MODE.

If burst mode saves as a one HEIC files. <-- this, unlike Live Photos, should work as advertised (as one file)

I was under the impression it is possible to have a HEIF file contain both the still image and video.

The current behaviour of Image Capture drag and drop may not necessarily represent the capabilities of this format, which is a container format after all.

What I didn’t try is exploring the file structure of the Photos library to see how it’s stored inside. I’ll give that shot when I have some time.

Yes, it is possible but Apple didn't implemented it.

But you can also try to make an old-fashioned burst photo and see if that will be a single file.

But make sure to tick "export all frames not just the best" in iOS or macOS (don't remember where was it).
