How Many Jailbreakers Have Jagged Wiggly Icons in 2.1?

If you recently jailbroke 2.1, press and hold an icon on the home screen to get your icons wiggling. Now, are the icons smooth around the edges or do you see sharp pixelated edges as they move? It looks like like the anti-aliasing has been turned off by the jailbreak. Also, opening Apps took one second longer to open than without the jailbreak. I was just talking to a friend tonight and he has the same problem. I restored and refused to jailbreak 2.1 and my icons wiggle like normal again. Nice smooth edges around the icons.

Has anyone else seen this? If you can, take a screenshot of it because during my restore, I lost the screenshot I took. (Yes, I should have saved it, but I didn't). To take a screenshot while your icons are wiggling, you have to hold home down and while holding home, you must hold an icon until they start wiggling. Keep holding home and press the power button to take the screenshot. If you don't hold home the entire time while you do this, the second you press the home button to take the screenshot, the icons stop wiggling thus making it take a normal screenshot (no wiggles).

It's late and I'm tired... I hope all of this made sense.

Edit: Here are screenshots I just took. I just installed WinterBoard on my jailbroken iPod touch. WinterBoard is definitely the problem. If you have WinterBoard installed on 2.1, you probably have jaggies.

I see an occasional artifact at the top edge of some icons as they shift by one pixel, but I wouldn't call it "jagged".

You can take a screenshot without ssh....just press Home and Sleep together, the screen will flash white, camera sound will click, and the photo will be in your Camera Library.

I definitely have the exact problem you're talking about. I also have a problem with my flashlight icon on 2.1. It used to sort of "glow" around the edges. It looked kind of cool. The glow actually seemed to come off the icon to the point that it almost interfered with the icon label. Now, it just sort of has an extra blue border that is now "glow" just a blue border. The fade part is gone. Not sure if the two are related?

See attached pic for jaggies. For those who don't know what to look for, the upper left of the photo and weather icons you can see the jaggies, and also the upper right of the "Go Home" app.

The issue with the jagged icons has been solved, but was the problem with 1 second longer app launches been solved? Was that from Winterboard as well?

I have noticed this issue, and it only happens with 3rd party apps. It doesn't happen with the Apple apps.

Did you try uninstalling winterboard and seeing if it went back to normal? If so, I'll give it a shot and see. I suppose it's possible that my apps are launching a second slower. I don't think I'd have noticed if you didn't say anything though. I guess I didn't use 2.1 unjailbroken long enough to notice any difference? I mean, they don't snap open instantly but they open fast enough that I didn't think there was a problem.

When was the issue solved? I'm running winterboard version 0.9.2584-1 that I saw was available last night. Unless they came out with another update this morning, I don't see how the problem was solved? Unless the solution does not involve a winterboard update.

I sort of put that theme together myself. I found the dock picture somehwere, and the background picture somewhere else, and then modified the "split" version of the weatherwidget to display slightly differently. If you are mainly interested in the weatherwidget, you can google it.. there's a great thread on it over at the macthemes forum.

I'm still having the app launch delays but have never used Winterboard before. It definitely doesn't happen with Apple apps. Most, if not all, 3rd party apps have a small delay. Anyone else notice this?

I un-jailbroke and restored as a completely new phone. The jagged icons are gone and the 2-3 second delay I was getting from opening SMS/iPod/Safari is gone too. Could be from the reboot, but then again, I was rebooting regularly while jailbroken.

I noticed a bunch of apps/services/cryptic hacker stuff that was installed by QuickPwn that I didn't ask for and didn't need or want...maybe one of these apps was slowing the phone down. Without any of it, things seem snappier.

Overall, I'll sorta miss my themes, but not much else that jailbreaking currently offers is very compelling. I didn't really like using themes as much as I used to either. There are so few nice ones and so many awful ones. Plus, if you get a decent one, you want all the icons to look like it, and it's a constant race to keep up with new apps you get from the app store.

This is the 2nd time I've jailbroken the 3G and undid it not long after. On my 1st gen, I jailbroke early on and didn't unjailbreak ever. I think that says a lot about the state of jailbreaking and the migration of developers from the jailbreak community to the app store.

Agreed. Themes are weird too because you can have wicked cool icons on the SpringBoard, but the rest of the iPhone UI looks pretty much stock. I know you can change colors and buttons and stuff, but nothing really radical.

I upgraded to 2.1 within minutes of its release and was AMAZED at how quick it was, compared to 2.0.X ... Two days later I used QuickPwn and immediately noticed a fairly major slowdown - apps took longer to open, rebooting took longer, etc. After an Installer crash gave me my first ALoD on 2.1 (WTF?!) I decided to try vanilla 2.1 again. Voila!! Back to normal - quick, responsive and much less irritating to use.

I really wish we didn't have to choose between eye candy and performance, but given the choice, I'll take the performance any day. On my iPod Touch it doesn't really matter so much, but on my PHONE - yeah. It needs to be responsive, because I depend on it for so much.

I guess it's personal preference, but I can't go back to unjailbroken 2.1. And not because of themes alone. Mostly because of the categories / quick gold combo. (Or quick gold / poof if you never want to look at the icons). The clean looking springboard beats out themes for me, although I like both. And I'll take the slight performance hit for it (if it even exists for me - I haven't confirmed it as everything seems alright). Plus, being jailbroken is more exciting. You can constantly "change things up" when you get bored with the phone. I think if I went back to unjailbroken the phone would become much more mundane to me. It was exciting unjailbroken for a couple months, because it was all new to me (first smart phone even) but it sort of became "just a phone." Now that it's *infinitely* customizable, I'm loving it more than ever. Also, all of the best "apps" come out for the jailbroken phones. The app store is cluttered with 99% garbage.

Anyway, it's all personal preference. I definitely agree with you on the theme thing, most are ugly and stupid, that's why I just like a different background, weather app, and dock picture.

With the exception of Taskbar Notifier, which is still in the process of being ported to 2.x, nothing I ever used from Cydia or Installler can touch the usefulness/fun factor of many of the apps I've gotten from the app store.

Some of the app store apps obviously started life on jailbroken phones, but have never been, and probably will never be, ported to 2.x. Why would a developer make something for Cydia when they could potentially make some serious money via the app store?

The way I see it, jailbreaking is now only good for 2 kinds of people...theme freaks and developers/hackers/hardcore tweakers.

i guess id fall under Theme freak.
suprisingly enough, the only icon thats jaggy for me is Installer.
For the record, i just jailbroke 2.1 no more than 5 minutes ago, and winterboard isnt installed yet.
i wonder why that is. lmao.

I guess it depends on the type of apps you like. There is virtually nothing on the app store that is really really all that great (IMO). Maybe it's just that the bad apps mask the best. But for jailbreaking stuff like cycorder is the perfect example - video recording. You're just not going to see stuff at that level on the app store.

And I would add a 3rd category to your list. People who want a clean springboard. If the ONLY thing available for jailbreakers was categories (or poof) and quick gold, I would endure the 1 sec lag (again, if it even exists) in order to have the clean springboard. Call it peace of mind I suppose.

Except... for Installer! For some reason the icon is lower than all the rest and is jagged when the wiggly icons are on. Cydia and the rest are perfectly fine!
