just wondering how many movies other appleTV users have in their iTunes collection. i have 128. This is ofcourse with the help of 'handbrake'......

Just 30, but then again, I have just started. Most of my collection is in Florida, and we are going down there next month to retrieve all of the stuff we have in storage. After that, it'll probably be another 100. All on a external 500 GB drive, I expect.

No actual movies. I own about 1,000 DVDs, but I've only ripped a handful (20) of concert DVDs to AppleTV.
43 movies! All will be reconverted to AppleTV preset when I get my 500GB HD inside my new iMac in October

VisualHub, I swear by it... It's the best video converting program out there, if you want content for your AppleTV, iPod, or iPhone it is a must have.

I have only 5 movies, all of my music and pics. I revolve my flicks and tv shows... but I'd rather have access to my music and pics if my Mac was down, just me...
I really hope they announce official ext. HD hookups. 40GB is not enough, but I got a great deal on mine. I really wish I had the 160GB.
Billabong, have you been to the VH website recently? There is a new "hires" setting to download. Also, have you unleashed the awesomeness of 1.78, 1.65, and 2.35:1 settings?

Source material is 720P HD no upconverting.... You haven't used your appletv until you load it up with some hd movies...
I find the 40GB good enough, streaming works fine for me... As for the hires haven't tried to much. Most I just use the same res and aspect as the source...
For converting I use VisualHub as I said above, and for where I find the content... Well I can't really say that, but if you look in the right places you may find some.
720P is a silly half HD broadcasting standard used for fast paced sporting events because it's smoother when showing motion. You aren't even getting the benefit of the 60FPS, since film is approximately 24. 1080 is the proper resolution for HD movies.
720p most certainly is HD. I agree it's not "Full HD" as the TV companies pushing 1080p would market it. But 720p technically qualifies as HD, according to the technical standards, as set forth by the ITU.
Whether one thinks 720p is silly or not, 720p movies on my appleTV still look better than anything any of the cable or satellite providers are passing off as HD content right now (HD-lite, anyone?). That may change in the future, but short of risking your dollar on a BD or HD-DVD player, 720p content via appleTV or similar media streaming solution is the way to go if picture quality is of any concern.
I completely agree with you, the average human eye cannot tell the difference between 720P and 1080P... I have an HD-DVD player, and have compared frame by frame and HD-DVD 1080P movie still and the AppleTV 720P still... There is only a slight difference in PQ with the 1080P. Now that is a still, when the video is playing you honestly won't tell a difference. Now true you aren't getting your DTS-HD and all that, but for Picture Quality it's great. Apple has a chance to beat out HD-DVD and Bluray if they would only put the HD content out there... I don't think they realize how they could affect the format war.
I just do the default AppleTV setting at High, and if I feel like it sometimes I do "Go Nuts" if I want that little bit of extra PQ.
How large is the projected screen you are playing this on? Projector hardware? I can't agree with you, as I have and HD-DVD player and have compared the same films in 720P as well. But to each his own. 1080 is literally 2.25times the resolution of 720P, there is a significant difference on large screens. Especially since everything must be upscaled from 720 to 1080 ANYHOW. And the end result will depend heavily on how good the internal scaler is. How much are you paying for a movie of half the resolution on AppleTV without any physical medium?
For what it's worth, the lossless audio codecs were a SIGNIFICANT factor in my move to HD-DVD.
