I've been running BeejiveIM in the background when I leave the house and end it when I get home. Battery usage seem normal (I don't see any drastic drainage of the battery).

So does anybody run apps in the background 100% of the time?

I've been trying but after a while it seems like Beejive isn't notifying me... so I kind of don't use it anymore.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

I use beejive as well for background but I haven't used it in a while. I'm not sure what other apps I would use

I tested out backgrounder with Fring to see if I could use Skype In even when the iPhone was in sleep mode. I found that it eventually cuts off the wireless, so I couldn't get a full test(it accepted calls for about an hour though).

I even tried with insomnia, which is supposed to keep wireless active even after the iphone is asleep. . .but it still didn't work

Same here, but I was trying to use it for Pandora. I gave up.

I used it for Beejive for a while until I realised it stops notifying me after a while. I do use it a lot when I think about it, but only for a few seconds. For example, if I am using Beejive or on a game and I need to use the internet. I would background it, do what I need to do then go back. I wouldn't normally leave something backgrounded all day as I don't see the point when it stops notifying after a certain time.

What I have started doing, to get my notifications on Beejive is set up a 'push' mail2web email account and set Beejive to email me when a message is received. It is almost instantanious and works great for me.

It's well-documented that Beejive won't run in the background using backgrounder for longer than a couple of minutes. Problem with system memory or something if I remember correctly.

I'm going to test running Nimbuzz in the background.

Beejive runs fine in the background on my iPhone, its the connection that times out, when the screen locks the wifi only stays active for a time then disconnects. Nothing to do with Beejive!

works fine

tried it with insomnia running and used it for fstream and beejive. fstream has run for a few hours without dropping connection and beejive alerted me to an im when i was doing something else on the phone. so no problems for me. just followed the instructions about setting up a plist and i'm a happy bunny! :D
battery life does get reduced more quickly - obv so i'm careful to make sure i dont leave something running if i'm out all day but i'd recommend it - if only so that you can use your phone for multiple tasks as opposed to apple wanting to restrict you to (mainly) the one.

How to track the applications running in the background as some times I enable background and forget to disable it..

well in your plist you specified x number of apps so just remember which apps you listed and try to remember which are currently running. easy non?
