I am an avid book reader and I have a many books, which makes me feel guilty about all those innocent trees which had to be sacrefieced to accomodate my hobby. Has anyone any experience with e-readers and what do you think the reading experience will be on the iPad? What i will miss is browsing in bookshops - iTunes does not give the same experience! So how many of you will use the iPad as their main source to read??

I already moved to reading almost everything digital now. I use my iPhone and laptop to read; but would love to get an iPad for reading. I think it will be PERFECT.
I don't mind the bookstores, I go there to browse but just bring my phone along and buy them as I go along.
Now, don't go all feeling sorry for the trees. 1) Trees used here were grown specifically for the book making process, 2) Most books are using mostly recycled paper, thus not sacrificing trees at all, 3) an iPad or other electronic book is most likely worse for the world then the destruction of the trees used for all of your books combined.

To the OP - i expect to use some here, in some form. The exact particulars remain to be seen....
I will but only if I am not limited to the iBook store. If I can import other, non-DRM protected files into the app I will use it, and will certainly buy books through it after a little time. It's just like iTunes/iPod - let me bring my own content with me and I will eventually get hooked into your service and start buying content from you.
I can only assume Apple will let you sync books over from other sources (plenty of good public domain work, for example) and if we're lucky they will have iTunes convert text (plain, rtf, html, doc, etc) into the epub format for you.

I definitely will. I've no bookshelf space left and no room for more bookshelves. I've been a book hoarder for decades. My only worry is e-books seem so ephemeral -- you have them one day and the next they could all be gone (true for everything I suppose.) Of course, this is paranoia coming from a 50-year old just beginning to become too set in my ways.

If I get an iPad, it would likely be because it had a Kindle App. I far prefer Amazons digital content business model to Apples and not really interested in Apples as it is.
Lots of other things I found disappointing with the iPad too so not sure I'll bite on the first generation even if it was a great reader.

I was looking to buy a Kindle and then Apple made its magic happen. Everything I need on the go in an Apple product, light compact and cheaper than a macbook with basic functionnality for work !

I'll be the first to admit I'm not an avid reader and most of the time I think about reading I'm sitting in my car waiting on someone, or sitting somewhere that a book is not available even if I had the urge. I think the fact the iPad will likely travel in my briefcase daily, iBook may get some use from me. I have enough paper and blueprints to carry that a book is just more weight I never feel I would have time for. Then end up playing a game on the iPhone out of boredom. I like that I will have choices now, I have several subscriptions with Zinio and have used it a bit on the iPhone but it's just to small for me, can't wait for the larger screen to have my entire Zinio library on a readable screen.
