I realised today that i had less songs in my library than previously thought.

I have around 4,000 songs that i class as my favourite songs / albums

I have a further 5,000 songs on CD's and on backup drives of stuff i don't listen to that much, comedy cd's, podcasts and loads of random junk from the napster days.

It got me thinking, do i need iTunes match, i was surprised that my collection is a lot lower than the 25,000 limit that some people are moaning about. But the thing is all my music is stored in lossless ALAC format for my home hifi. So it is too big for the iPhone / iPad. So iTunes match is perfect for giving me portably good quality.

I am currently at 25,664 (over 1200 were purchased through iTunes so I am not over the limit...yet). I have a LOT of live shows from Grateful Dead, Zeppelin, Stones, Phish, Allman Brothers so thats where a lot of it comes in...just studio releases I am at 10k songs or so. Maybe more, haven't really looked in a while.

I have 2,239 songs. Too few judging by what most people have.

I just don't think I could have 10,000 songs. Do you guys actually like all of them? Or have them just to have a complete discography of the artists you like?

If I have any free time I am listening to music, so I have to say 99% of the stuff in my library I like for one reason or another. I mean I am such a nut I prefer Vinyl over anything its just Vinyl is not portable...still waiting for the in dash turntable though...:)

I have a lot more than 10,000. Heck, I think I have a lot more than 35,000 - decades of music collecting (cassette, CD, vinyl, digital downloads etc).

I noticed that my track numbers jumped heavily after I expanded out from the pop/rock genre some years ago and moved into other areas like classical, jazz, world music, etc. That was when I went from a small amount of music that I listened to frequently to a lot of music that got played maybe once or twice a year at most. I also play music at least 10 hours a day on average, so that helps as well.

I started my "music collection" when I was about 13 (by a music collection, I mean keeping it all organised and up-to-date with correct info and artwork), and it's 5581 songs.

I'm 18 now, so I've still got a while to reach the 25,000 limit :)

I have about 12,500 songs in my current library in iTunes that's stored in the "cloud." I have a lot more stored in back up disks that I'm too lazy to import. I like having access to all my music. I never know what I want to listen to at any moment. And yes, I listen to ALL my music. I have an eclectic taste in music. I have about 4500 locally stored in my iPhone. iTunes Match works great for me, I don't have to pick and choose anymore what goes into my phone.

i usually only like a few songs per album so i dont add whole albums to my library, just buy single tracks most of the time. its a small library but i know i can listen to any song on there for an extended period of time and enjoy it.

Slight tangent here

If you like vinyl I'm assuming you have a good amp and speaker set up.

Whilst my music collection is nothing to match yours i do also love my music and own a very good valve amp and speaker set up.

I'm toying with the idea of retiring my cd deck in favour of ALAC streaming over airport express into dac, into valve amp.

Is this something you have tried / do? Or are you a firm believer in vinyl / cd only?

OK, judging by how the people who have a lot of songs talk about cassettes and vinyl, then I guess I'm young, or they too old, or both.:p

But I can see myself in 20-30 years having 10-15,000 songs.

I have about 1300. I had double that a couple months ago but spent some time and deleted the songs I never listened to

Age is definitely a factor, as some of us old fogies have had lots of time to accumulate all our "stuff". Vinyl isn't even an old man's game anymore - there's a lot of new Indie stuff out there on vinyl.

But to your 10-15,000 song comment, it really depends on whether or not you're the type of person who likes a small number of songs that you like to play over and over, or if you're the type of person who's always hungering for something new. Neither of these are the "right" way, it all depends on the person. I'm definitely in the latter category - I love new music.

My turntable is pretty crappy unfortunately but I am saving up to get a new one. With 2 kids + wife, might be a while. I am working on a good setup, I have a nice pair of B&W speakers I am waiting to get hooked up to a nice tube amp when I get my new turntable.

Right now I have quite a few things in ALAC but really for the most part everything in my library is 256kbps AAC. I do have a few AE's in my house for downstairs and patio listening. I think it sounds excellent and haven't had 1 issue playing any of my Beatles ALAC files and think the quality is excellent.

I have even gone one step further and hooked up my current turntable to an AE and have it going to any room in the house as well...kinda neat.

Led Zeppelin? Bob Dylan? The Rolling Stones? Jimi Hendrix?
