For all of those who dropped their smartphone before without a case on, how badly was that phone damaged?

What phone was it and is it still usable?

I've only had 1 somewhat serious drop with my iPhone 4S that did some damage, if you want to call it that. The glass survived, but one of the black antenna bits along the frame got messed up a little.

My GS4 likes to find its way in between my seat and center console in my car. I've dropped it down there about a half a dozen times. The fake metal framing around the phone has some minor dings from it, but nothing serious.

My old Blackberry though, damn that thing used to take a beating, and did so like a champ.

I dropped my GS4 onto my table. It has a slight dent on the metal frame/bezel.

Hope there isn't any damage onto the actual phone though.

Dropped my 2 day old caseless iPhone 3G in a parking lot. Scratches around the corners and sides. Screen was still perfect. Went straight to the apple store after that and bought a case and have been using one ever since.

A few weeks after the purchase I dropped my iphone 5 on the hard floor while I was using it standing. Nothing besides a little scratch (which is now hidden by a leather case) and a quite big Shock :D

And I dropped my 3G during lecture. It fell a long way downstairs and didn't get any damage

I used an Otterbox Defender and, more recently, a Ballistic case. I've dropped my iPhone 4S a couple of times - the most serious was actually a spill out of a pocket. It fell a few feet onto a stone floor at work. The polycarbonate screen of the Ballistic has a small dent in it from that but the phone remains untouched/unaffected.

A lot of my friends laugh at me for ruining the aesthetics of my phone with these bulky cases but I'd rather protect my phone and they also make the iPhone sit better in my rather chunky/large hands. :)

The last time I can recall ever dropping my smartphone was back with the iPhone 3G. Otherwise, I'm just really careful with my phones.

I dropped my I phone 4 at the gym locker room while the phone was wearing an external mophie battery case. It was a hard drop on the floor. The case stayed on I thought everything was fine until I took the case off and the back glass of my I phone was totally shattered :(

Below is my injured I phone 4. I don't know if I should get it repaired. The phone woks just fine now. ..

Depends on the smartphone

Nokia N82 - Once but no damage

Apple iPhone 2G - 2-3x on asphalt usually coming out of car or slipping out of my hand. Major scrapes on back.

Apple iPhone 4 - Never

Google Nexus One - Once (yesterday) but no damage

Samsung Focus - Never

Cherry Mobile Flare (aka Karbonn A9+) - Never

HTC One - Never

Actually my nearly 2-yr told Nexus One was dropped by accident just yesterday. My Wife pushed it by accident and it fell between the wall and bed and landed on tile. Only a 1.5 ft drop. Zero scratches or scruff marks. HTC made such a durable phone mixed with unibody metal and teflon/soft touch. Watch the Nexus One Story: Testing on YouTube to know what I mean. Same drop for iPhone 4/4s/5 or Nexus 4, and I likely see some scruff marks or shattered glass.

The next phone on my durability list I would get is a Sony Xperia ZR. It hits all points as being UNCOMMON, nice design, decent materials, durable, good size, nice specs, removable battery, and microSD slot like what my Nexus One has. My other phones always failed at something whether too damn common, no removable battery, lack of memory slot, average design, or cheap build quality (Samsung Focus), etc. Many phones of today are just too big or just lacks on something.

These are all the smartphones I've dropped without a case: (I never use cases btw)

Dropped iPhone 3G to the ground multiple times - No damage.

Dropped iPhone 3G from one stair to the other - No damage. (OK, the screen opened a little, but I was able to push it back)

Dropped iPhone 3GS to the ground multiple times - No damage.

Dropped iPhone 4 to the ground multiple times - No damage.

Dropped iPhone 4S to the ground multiple times - No damage.

Dropped iPhone 4S from the table and it flew through the entire room - No damage.

Must be lucky.

To many to count. But luckily 99% of the time its been inside my home or at work where it was falling onto a carpet instead of concrete. Thankfully I've never damaged a phone due to dropping it.

Went "naked" for the first time ever with one of my phones, the S3.

I dont know if its that much more slippery than my previous iPhones or I am getting older and clumsier but I have dropped this phone no less than 10 times.

Screen is cracked horizontally and now vertically.

I will never go "naked" again. :(

My pre-ordered Note 3 is going to be in a s view cover, a case, something!

Yeah, I drop my phones all the time too. The original iPhone took so many drops. It lasted from 2007 to 2010 until it accidently fell out of my pocket into the toilet. And that was like 6 months after I cracked the bottom of the screen.

The iPhone 4 fell out of the Apple bumper and shattered.

It took like 6 months for me to break the camera on my S2. And that was after numerous drops where the back and battery went flying across the room.

The Huawei (only $80) was the only one that managed to crash face first into concrete, have water dumped on it, and take a couple of dives with only a small dent on the side where unless you touch it, isn't noticeable.

I've already dropped my 520 twice and I've only had it for a month.

I say the original iPhone from 2007 was the best built iPhone ever created. And the only model that doesnt have the same design as other generations. It sold the least because it was very expensive, was available in very limited carriers and markets, and it wasnt subsidized for 3 years like the 3Gs and after. It felt more exclusive and unique owning a jailbroken iPhone between 2007-2009.

It would go down as a Top 3 fav phone of mines if I didnt sell that model twice because it crashed alot (128 MB RAM), weak camera, Retina Display didnt spoil me, couldnt install newer apps, touchscreen froze when I received a text while on a call, and simply lagged like molasses by iOS3. If you could put the innards of a 5s into the first gen iPhone, I would buy it in a heartbeart even if it is thick by today's standards.

But yes, it was quite slippery. The last iPhone that felt comfortable in the hand for ME was the iPhone 3G/3Gs because of their rounded backs even though it used plastic. I personally dont like the feeling and build quality used on the iPhone 4/4s/5/5s. Design-wise, very nice and one of the best. Ergonomics, not really. Too angular for me. I prefer rounded edges and corners. And I also prefer the plastic and design used on the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Nexus over the glossy hyperglaze of the S3 and S4. Sometimes older is better.

The phone I dropped the most wasnt a smartphone. It was my Nokia 3360. But that was built like a tank. The most comfortable and best built quality smartphones I've owned is the Nexus One, BlackBerry Bold 9000, and iPhone 2G in that order. HTC One is up there but I still prefer a softer material since aluminum metal can scrape or dents. Hopefully the Note 3 with the faux leather back will have the same durability like 2008's Bold 9000.

I have dropped my Sony Ericsson Neo V phone more than 15 times!

One was bad, as it felt from my pocket while I was riding my bike and the back cover opened, battery went out! I was lucky that the phone is made from plastic so it only got some very minor scratches. I don't even use my Case-Mate case anymore. Prefer the naked look.

LOL that's worse than mine.

I dropped and cracked my 3GS (no case) probably 10 times and I've dropped my iPhone 5 and cracked (no case) 10+ times. Cracked in three places.

I'm getting the 5s and I'm not getting a case.

Once, and it was the nexus 4. It made the silver rim bow out a little so I had to take a quarter and push it down and smooth it out. No one would ever know it fell :)

I do use my phones naked always too

beyond true. I still have my original iphone and feel the hardware design is still better than most, if not all phones on the market. I remember buying it at launch and paid $800, but a month later the price went down and Apple gave me money back

The "Garden" state
Up until two days ago I could proudly say I've owned probably 10 smartphones in my life and never broken one.

Sadly, I cracked the hell out of my Lumia 928 screen the other day, and am currently getting the runaround from the authorized repair place Nokia suggested.
