Just a question, since my other thread isn't related to this problem at all.

How many ways are there to run Windows on a Mac? I know it can be done externally -- but I'm kind of new haha. I've been considering doing this instead of buying a new laptop altogether. My sister has Vista (no disk, since it came installed, but a serial number for activation), so I was wondering if I could transfer it from her computer to mine?

2 boot camp(free), parallels and vm ware fusion cost $80. boot camp is better for games and parallels will run side by side w/ OS X which splits up your RAM when running it, so its nice if you don't wanna restart to switch os's.

Ya... of you want to run Vista and Leopard at the same time parallels you better make sure you have at least 3GB of ram, more depending what you're doing in each OS.

Quick question, do Parallels and VMware fusion do the same thing?

I think I might go out and buy Parallels tomorrow. XD

And haha, I have no idea -- I can't answer that question, sorry!

ANOTHER QUESTION. How can I get more RAM?

Sorry to double post, but I have another question and needed to bump.

If I use Parallels to transfer Vista form my sister's computer to mine, will Vista stay on her computer too?

I would suggest getting VMware Fusion instead. I like it better.

More ram, you would need to buy.. www.macsales.com thats where I bought my 4gb for my unibody.

You cant just transfer the operating system from one computer to another (well you can.. but not done the way you want to do it.
You will need a windows install disk (NOT A restore disk that usually comes with computers). Also, that serial on the side of your computer will probably not work with most copies. You will need an OEM copy for that serial to work.

Side note, the vista computer that did not include a disk should include a program to make restore disks.. I suggest you do this in case you ever need to restore windows.

So I can't use a firewire to transfer Vista to my computer through Parallels? ... <_< Without the disk?

In any way (Bootcamp, Parallels, Fusion,...), Do I have to buy a Windows?

Thank you.

No, you'll need the disk.

Yes, you will need to purchase Windows. I think I might have saw somewhere that you can buy virtualization software (that is what VM Ware and Parallels are) with a pre made image of different Windows versions. I may be wrong on that though.

But in any case, yes.

Alright, well I talked to my dad and buying it shouldn't be too much of a problem. :] Thanks everyone!
