Let's guess.

How many will be a success? How many will be a failure?

As many as Apple can make. That's how many will sell. People are more excited about this thing than many recent Apple products and Apple stock hit an all time high over this thing. Even if a year from now people are yawning about the iPad, during week one Apple has a license to print money.

I'm guessing the preorders will be somewhat limited.

In store sales will be brisk, since there is sure to be so much hype about this the days directly preceding availability it won't even be funny. You won't be able to spit without hitting a news/morning/talk show that is talking about it.

So my guess: 500K in the first weekend, if they have that many available. I don't think a million in the first week is out of the question.

Less than 250K over that first weekend will probably be a disappointment, unless supplies are constrained.

It really doesn't matter how many Apple pushes out the first week. What matters is in 6 months if people still are buying them.

And the determiner of that is how Apple develops and evolves the content paradigm. That evolution was what put the iPod way over the top. If Apple gets good buy-in (they appear to be) from book publishers, book sellers, magazines, textbooks, app developers, and can continue to improve their movie/TV show offerings, the thing will be red-hot for years to come.

I do. It took the iPhone more than two months to get there. The iPad will be faster, but not 10 times faster.

1 million iPads would be 1/3 of the number of computers they sold in their most recent (record-breaking) quarter. I don't see the iPad outselling Macs in its current form.
