How many will be sold on Friday?

After seeing the news that DSGi stores will be stocking the iPad too, I thought I'd do a little maths and see how many would be sold/stocked on Friday.

If each store is allocated 5 of each model, then DSGi would only contribute to 4,170 units being sold.

I know that is using pretty linear numbers without considering store size differences, but it still seems like a tiny number.

There are only 27 Apple stores too, how many iPads are they likely to hold on release day?

I think Apple stores will have at least a few hundred. I tried to question a staff member about this last week. All he would say is that they are expecting "plenty" and that in his personal opinion they would last into the afternoon of launch day at least.

Personally, i think he's underestimating demand, i think they'll all be sold by 10am.

i would expect at least 50 per store. you have to remember that the majority of orders will be online - which are already in the hundreds of thousands! stock must really be limited.

No one is going to bother with 16gb especially wifi version so the big sellers will be 32GB 3G and 64GB 3G IMHO with 64 and 32GB wifi being the next best sellers

I would imagine Regent St will have 1000 of each model, smaller Apple stores 500 of each model and each DSG store about 20 of each model

I think there will be lots of 16gb left but 32 and 64 will go within 1-2 hrs I would say

I imagine that it would be pretty unlikely for a shop (particularly the Apple store) to stock 5 or less iPads on launch day - it just wouldn't make commercial sense.

Also I suspect that the 16Gb wifi and 64Gb 3G will see highest demand.

That sounds about right to me. I also agree that 3G models will be the biggest sellers. Free WiFi just isnt available widely enough outside of big city centres in the UK yet. Apart from McDonalds perhaps...

Cool, well, I'll be going for either the 16GB Wifi or 16GB Wifi+3G. I doubt that I'd use more than 16GB.

aww. i have ordered that model! a lot of the people i know have aswell. its a great entry model.

I'd agree with DoFoT9 - I think the 16GB wifi will sell plenty as it's the entry level model. I'm getting my parents one, my housemate is getting one, my office mate is getting one, and I know at least two other friends who are getting one. I opted for the 32Gb 3G, but drawing from what I know my friends & colleagues are getting it's a 4:1 ratio of the 16GB Wifi to all other models...

So long as you get there early, I doubt people will come away disappointed. Turn up at noon and, oh dear, I suspect more waiting will be in order.

With the noises I hear from TNT, there's a slim chance mine will come tomorrow, in which case on Friday I'll watch with interest how the retail experience goes...via my iPad w00t!

Like others, I suspect the 16gb in either incarnation will sell like hotcakes. Even as a gadget nerd who isn't skint, I struggle to justify my 32gb 3G, so I reckon loads will plump for the cheapest option.

You see I look at the opposite way. Apple probably intentionally limited the sales online. Apple has always been about the media and publicity, they love seeing people queuing outside their stores and all the media carrying it on tv and papers with pics.

They wont get much press if they sell them all online. The press aren't gonna come to your house and wait for the UPS van to arrive and ask what you feel about the product.

For this reason i believe there will be more in stores then they actually had for their online store .

Hmm..I think you're underestimating how many people are going to use thier ipad
only at home instead of using a bulky laptop for browsing etc..

I think Friday will be a sell out regardless of how many they have. I think many people over here have underestimated demand for it. I was shocked when the pre-order dates had to be put back just a day or two after they started for the UK. As a consequence of that, I also know a fair few people who have opted to chance grabbing one at the Apple Store as appose to pre-ordering.

What do we think stock is going to be like for cases? I've ordered an Apple Case but it's not due to ship until 7th June. If my iPad gets delivered tomorow, I might chance the store on Friday morning for a case and maybe one or two other bits and pieces.

Agreed. They REALLY want national news to do a story on people queuing outside their stores AND them selling out on launch day. Free advertising of the best possible kind, ie "These iPads are such a hot item they sold them all in hours... so everyone shoudl want one".

Then, with most tech geeks satisfied, the second wave of customers will buy all they can bring in for a few months.

+1... the rational part of my brain doesn't actually believe there will be a shortage on launch day, that it's just hyped up so that Apple gets the necessary press & the photos of people queuing up. Sure, some models will be sold out by noon at Regent Street, but I honestly don't think there'll be that few of them stocked. The "Apple rep" who said something akin to "there's no point even thinking about queuing unless one is willing to sleep 49 days in a shoebox filled with mice outside the store while apple employees throw shuffles at their heads" is to me classic hype-building. Why would a PR person dissuade people from heading to the shop?

All that said, I'm of course going to be there at the crack of dawn. You know, just in case

ok, that logic makes sense. i wonder how many they have shipped online thus far. and how many they have in stores ready to go. would be interesting.

Spot on, im holding on the rational part of my head that its not gonna be as mad as they are making it out to be.

Products tend to sell out on day one when the mainstream of consumers all go for the product. For the most part a lot of people don't even know the Ipad is being released this friday. Some guy at work keeps asking me everyday if ive got 'it' yet despite me telling him a million times that its May 28th.

I mean this is actually the first time i've ever bought an Apple product (and I've bought tons) without even actually having a go with one of the models in the shop.

The way I see it, they will sell tons on Friday then potential customers over the next few days will play with them them at Apple or see someone at work or on the train use one. That's when the mainstream customers will go mad for it and say i fancy me one of them ipad thingys and then it will be impossible to get one. (Think this Bank holiday Mon)

As I said in another post, even in America they didn't sell out on day one. If they do sell out on Friday in the UK, it will probably come down to limited supply as opposed to thousands of people queuing outside Apple shops.

I know 14 that are getting an iPad or have ordered one (I converted 9 of them )

7 are getting 64GB 3G
4 are getting 32GB 3G
2 are getting 64GB wifi
1 is getting 16GB wifi

I got the 16GB wifi. Happy with it, was expensive enough without paying more for 3g or extra storage!

Like the first gen iPhone we'll either see a price drop near xmas or 2nd gen will cave on materials and cut cost, so at that point I'll increase the storage.

Looking at the apps available so far 16GB should be more than enough for a while. Won't use it for music really, pictures take up about 2GB (6000 images) but that can be cut, rest is video - but again can stream that via airvideo

Just wish Wired magazine came in under 500MB though!

I don't know about UK consumers, but in the US the 16GB model was the first to sell out in many locations and still sought after.
