What baseline is Apple using for their "brighter" screen comparisons on the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's? Is the 17" 36% brighter than the Powerbook or than the 15" MacBook Pro (as for the former, the processer specs are compared to the PowerBook G4, so I wasn't sure)?

The 17" MBP is 37% brighter than the last 17" G4.

The 15" MBP is 67% brighter than the last 15" PB G4

Now, both models of the MBP have the same brightness.

Still here.
What unit of measurement and instrument do they use to determine just how much brighter one thing is from another?

Luminance perhaps?

Luminance (also called luminosity) is a photometric measure of the density of luminous intensity in a given direction. It describes the amount of light that passes through or is emitted from a particular area, and falls within a given solid angle. The SI unit for luminosity is candela per square metre (cd/m2).

I think it's confounded by the color of the fumes, what with wavelength-dependent absorption and so on.

P.S. I don't smoke the weed, if it ain't purple or blue. :)
