I have a huge problem with photos on my wife's iPhone (5C, iOS 9.2.1). Even with the option to optimize them turned on, photos take more than 8.9 GB. Because phone runs out of disk space all the time. And what is worse, when I delete anything (Apps) after a while the free space is all eaten by the photos app again - it literally grows until the disk is full again.
At the same time, all photos (and videos) stored at iCloud in their original quality take 14.6 GB of space.

Those of you who have photos/disk optimalization on - could you check what relation between local and iCloud photos storage looks like in your case? I wonder if 8.9/14.6 is normal or not.

It all depends for how much space it uses and will be different for everyone. Because as soon as you look at a individual photo it downloads the full res to your phone instead of just being the much smaller in size thumbnail.

Two people with 1000 photos each could show very different storage sized taken because of that.

Currently at 7,277 photos and 225 videos for a total of 34.5 GB's in iCloud. Optimized it is using 6.2 GB's. That number should get smaller after some time because I've taken a few 1080p 60 FPS videos recently.

As stated by lagwagon above, everyone's numbers will vary but that kind of gives you an idea of what you can accomplish.

The photos are stored in iCloud and the low-res on your iPhone but when you view a photo, it downloads locally so the full-res photo is now stored on your phone as well.

iCloud photo cant be used for storing all your photos of life.

Photo Library should let me manage at least 2 kind of photo in Mac. One for synchronized with other devices and other that don't. So you can manage 100GB in content and only sync depending your filters: last 6 months and photos with my daughter faces for example

You can't include all your library thumbnails in a 16GB device

In the other hand Apple has a problem with cache. iOS 10 need a button for clean the cache of iPhone
