How Much Do You Spend on Rentals?

In the recent earnings call, it was noted that the movie rental part of Apple TV was working very well and more and more people were starting to try it.

Out of curiosity, how much do you think you spend on rentals?

I tend to rent/buy a lot of movies and though it's hard for me to pin down, I'd estimate that I've probably spent $400-500 on movies and TV shows since I got my Apple TV last year (right when "Take 2" was announced). Is anyone else filling the Apple bank account similarly?
 
None! :D

On a very rare occasion I'll rent an HD flick but otherwise, nada. I've probably yet to spend a $20 on rentals.
 
I always rent one of the weekly 99 cent rentals. I end up traveling a lot for work, and sometimes it's fun to watch something random - and if I end up not watching, it's only 99 cents!

I am the same when on then road. But I like to rent a good film as well. I would spend about $5-$10 a week between iphone and ATV.

Great service. Love it.
 
rentals

I rent maybe 4-5 movies per month on my :apple:TV, mostly the new releases. I don't buy movies, don't rip movies, and own zero DVDs. Thus, if I don't rent on :apple:TV and don't see it in theaters, I'm missing it.

I tend to watch lots of free content, especially video podcasts.

I'm ready to spend but can't find anything to spend it on. I'm not into Hollywood or violence which leaves ATV to stream only the ripped DVDs I buy.
 
i rent 4 movies a month, on average. overall, i'm pleased with the service, except the lack of titles. apple needs to work harder on getting more movie content on it.

its frustrating to wait for the new release; its also frustrating to see how some rental titles become buy-only.
 
I've bought 77 movies, assuming they were all bought at $9.99, that would be $769.33. I've also purchased 5 short films, which are $2-$3 each, so add another $10 to that for $779.33, roughly. Some of the movies I might have purchased on sale, or paid $14.99 for.

As far as rentals, I only rent a movie if it is not available to buy, priced at $14.99 for an older movie, or is something I don't really care to own (very rarely the case). In all I have probably rented 20+ movies, HD whenever available. Somewhere around $150-$200 worth of rentals.

All added up, Apple has probably gotten $1K off of me in movies alone. I've purchased a lot more as far as TV and music is concerned though.

The prices are too high for it to be a decent value for me. I don't buy music from iTunes and I don't rent/buy movies from iTunes. I'll stick with Netflix until the prices come down to a price that matches or beats Netflix.

Tell me about it. I made my money back on Netflix just with a few TV show seasons and a streaming movie or two. Oh yeah, they'll also send you DVDs or Blu-ray Discs in the mail! It's mostly not as instant as the iTunes rentals, but the disc quality is much better, I can rent full-quality HD movies, and the TV show streaming is unbeatable.

Apple should really consider getting into bed with Netflix. If these two guys were to team up, they could create one dynamite product/service.
 
Zero. I do not tolerate DRM in any form and I prefer to own my DRM-free movie (and music) collection. I buy DVDs and rip them to my hard disk - which is entirely legal in my home country Germany.

I also don't own an - in my opinion completely useless - AppleTV. My Xbox 360 also serves perfectly as a media extender and is being fed from my Mac Pro via Connect 360.
 
I don't buy much from iTunes but have plenty of the free samples. What I have brought:
Dr Horribles trilogy @ $6.00.
Fringe special 6 eps for $6.00
SG-1 last show $2.00
Atlantis 3 shows $6.00
1 movie, Kinky Boots, $10.00
I've rented 1 movie, Gross Point Blank, to see how it would work for $2.00
I tend to rent using Redbox and $1.00 a pop and do about 2 a week. I buy used and discount DVDs from flea markets, pawn shops, Kroger, Walmark, Blockbuster for about $5.00 each.

I rip most of my collection of DVDs and have completed several series, X-files, Buffy, and more and about 500 movies and watch them all on my :apple:TV.
 
I rent about 3 or 4 movies a month.

The kids like to do Family movie night. The hardest part is finding something that everyone will like.
 
I've rented 4 movies so far in the past 2 months. I don't own a BR player (yet), and the HD itunes movies look far superior to my oppo upconverter. Wall E in HD on iTunes looked beyond amazing on my TV. We still use netflix (the lowest option) for movies we can't find on itunes. Netflix is by far, the most economical route, however, I find netflix to be a rather tedious process. I'm willing to pay the money to minimize that process.

Once I get a BR player I might go back to more netflix. But to be honest, 1080p doesn't look any different on my TV than itunes HD. And I love having all my media, instantly accessible, at any tv in the house. No DVDs to deal with, and scratch and lose. Movies will be the same as music...in the end...people will reject hard copies. The only media the live is books. DVDs will go the way of the CD in time.

Netflix movie streaming sucks. But netflix TV shows is freaking awesome. If Apple doesn't get off their rear and get something going with netflix, I'll be forced to get a 360 just to watch HD tv shows. There are some tv shows worth owning...but not many. I'd much rather rent tv shows than own.
 
I tend to rent one thing a week.

BD's are expensive, and I like to be able to just browse. I'll buy DVD's if they are very cheap (very...).

Apple TV is working well, but downloading HD rentals isn't working so well with the download speed in the area.
 
i dont really buy a movie unless i feel its worth my money.
the godfather series is a blast to own on digital media. i was able to retire my VHS box set.

so i rent regularly. i am not affiliated with any netflix service just because appleTV fills my need.

id say i rent 2-3 movies a month.
i will also rent the HD version if i find it graphically entertaining.
for instance, if i were to rent "transformers"...i would rent the HD version.
if i rented "step brothers"...i wouldnt mind just getting the regular version.
 
Apple Remote Question

My ATV remote is Hinky will the replacement IR work with it?

Same here, it's too hard not to when I've two Redboxes right next to each other less than two miles from my house and on the way. Though I know it's not so readily available in a lot of areas.

Haven't rented a movie via :apple:TV yet but will eventually I'm sure. I've yet to even watch the over 250 movies I've got ripped so..... after that I guess.
 
I've tried it a couple of times. The play period of 24 hours is too quick for me.

If Apple increased to the play period to 48 hours, I would probably rent more.
 
On rentals about £5 as that is all the 99p weekly rentals (can't remember what that is in dollars with the current exchange rate). I have only bought on film from the movie store, and i don't watch it often so it was a bit of a waste
