i cracked the glass on my iphone, took it too apple cost $200 to upgrade to a 3g and i got my broke iphone back.

Do a google search, there are also other companies like iResq.com that do it...maybe cheaper, maybe not. Their prices show as $120 just for the 3G glass to $200 for the original or if your 3G needs a new front assembly. They fixed my daughter's ipod after it mixed with a soda in her purse...

So essentially, Apple does not physically repair iPhones, they replace them?
That brings me to my second question: Do they transfer your data back or is that the users responsibility?

Yeah, I believe it's $200 if your phone is cracked. Same goes for if you need your battery replaced. They will charge you $200 and replace your phone.

I have a 1st Gen cracked iPhone, but I wonder if they would replace my phone with the 1st gen or the 3G iPhone. I hope the former, as I wouldn't want to have to pay the additional cost for 3G.

This is good information... so if you totally screw your phone, you can pay 200 and get a new one. Awesome.

The cheapest way I found was to go on YouTube.com and search on screen glass replacement. Then from their you can use a search engine's SHOPING feature and find the best deal on a glass screen.

Don't know about warrenty violations thought....

Also make sure you get the package deal with the screen & adhesive & sensor in on deal.

Average cost plus shipping will vary from
$40-$100

Don't quote me on this but Ive heard of a website called like ifixit.com that will send you a new screen and removal tool for $59.99 USD...read it on the forums and looked at the site looked legit as many users claimed at least. I would rather do that than have apple screw me over for a whole new handset.

Then it should be really affordable for you to make replacement screens.

Should be considering that its materials can be scooped off the nearest beach. All you need is a piece of glass and glass cutter. If mine broke I'd just take it to my grandfather that has these materials and skill.

I had a hairline crack in the glass screen of my 3GS that in no way affected my use of the phone -- it just looked like garbage :p

So I decided "Ah what the hell, I'll see if it's covered under warranty..." and took it to the Apple Store near where I live in NJ. The guy behind the desk noted that there were no signs of droppage, checked it for water damage, and replaced the screen for free, no questions asked (not the entire phone). I was in and out in less than 10 minutes with a brand new looking 3GS.

So if there's anyone who's been debating trying their luck with the Apple Store, I'd say give it a shot!

I had a similar experience as the above poster. My screen on my new iPhone 3GS was cracked. It was in a case. I honestly didn't remember ever dropping it. I went into the Apple store, and explained to them "look I know this sounds like a likely story, but I swear to you I didn't drop my phone, and as you can see, it's in a case with no signs of droppage." The Apple person said "since you aren't complaining about anything else being wrong with the phone, I'll replace your screen free of charge." She took my phone in the back and came out ten minutes later with a new screen, no questions asked. I didn't have to pay a dime. Needless to say, I was stoked. So my advice is the same as the above poster.. go to the Apple store and give it a try...

ifixit.com is the best, I do all my iphone, ipod, mac fixes myself. I just buy the part and they have step by step tutorials on how to fix them. Much less expensive.
