How much would the new iMac cost if you were to build it? (That is if you could build one. Of course you can not) This is just pretty much an analysis of the cost of parts to build. Prices are at a consumer level.

I priced in a case. I estimated $150


Point of this thread was not to actually try and build an iMac... But to see how much all these parts would cost us.

CPU looks a little pricey. I have seen it for around $320. Otherwise, that's about it.

OST, I could have been thinking about the desktop part.

I think the pricing u did was pretty accurate. I only wish we could build our own macs.

Btw the iMacs are a big time steal!

Interesting figures for sure! I certainly think that £1149 (GBP) is pretty good for the quality and spec of machine I've got (24",1G,320G).

Your looking at the desktop CPU.

The merom T7700 is in the mid 500's

I think the price from zipzoom fly is actually one of the best prices right now...

Those costs aren't accurate. Apple clearly gets those parts at a huge discount.

And I didn't say the design is bad. I sad the design doesn't allow for the control that building a system does.

Comparing consumer prices to mass produced machine prices is not very fair. I understand the concept but it is terribly flawed and rather useless.

I think consumer pricing should include the advantage of picking one over the other. Including the iMacs design and the custom built PC.

This is the last time I am going to say this...

The point of this thread was to see how much it would cost to duplicate (If you could) an iMac buying everything yourself at consumer prices.

This thread has nothing to do with other options or hard drive, video or memory upgradabilitiy.


Obviously a person building a custom PC would not choose more expensive Mobile parts. BUT FOR GOD SAKE MAN WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT BUILDING A CUSTOM PC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are just looking how much money all the iMac parts are worth. ARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!

As for the topic at hand, I think you are inflating the price of certain components such as the case (it certainly isn't worth $150), a few bucks should be shaved of the monitor's price since its only the panel, it shares the case and the power supply with the computer. Those speakers are not worth $30 neither is the slot loading dvd-burner and those logic boards couldn't possibly be $150 but no one could know the real price since they are custom made for Apple and sold in "major quantities" prices. I think your price might be a few hundred dollars over inflated.

Interesting analysis. I was one of those people who used to think Apple computers were too expensive. Well, I have my macbook now, and, no longer do I feel that way.

Ya some of that stuff might be inflated....


But I figure the case is probably pretty close if it was offered to consumers... With the Glass and Aluminum design it is pretty darn nice... Check out some of those Lian Li cases at Newegg.

Also you would be surprised about those dvd players! The regular tray slim dvd burners at newegg are going for like $65

No idea about the logic board... You are right there is no way to tell for sure.

No idea about speakers either... That was just a guess

I tried this the last week with desktop parts and came within about $100 of the iMac price and that was with no OSX, just Vista. The end result was a noisy, bulky tower with lots of cables sticking out, parts that don't interact without lots of tweaking time and Windows...

Er, well the figure you're going to end up with is always going to be about a third more than the cost of an iMac.

You don't need to add up a list when markup in the computer industry is about a third.

Or shout at people in threads for that matter...
