Based on this review, there's virtually no lag between unlocking and going to the home screen.

This should alleviate some of the concerns Touch ID 2.0 users had.

The Camera is crazy better, it doesn't look over exposed in direct sunlight like the X and the night shots look sharper and the lights not over exposed. Face ID looking speedy too.

Put the video on 0.5x speed and you'll notice of how a big difference it makes.

To be fair, though, life doesn't usually happen at 0.5x speed.

When something is already pretty fast, we're pretty poor at sensing much improvement.

The point is that you notice at how much difference it will make in real life and that it is 2x faster as it as promised.

The Verge has a similar test and he says it doesn't make a big difference.
So if the amount of time FaceID unlocked your phone was an issue, then maybe upgrade???
 

This video claims only a very modest increase, and looks like a realistic scenario.

That's awesome, currently face ID is decent but can be annoying at times because it's slow. It also seems fairly inaccurate, so I hope the improvements include accuracy as well.

That max looks so HUGE in that video, hehe, I can't wait as I love huge phones. Friday can't come fast enough.

That’s great that Face ID is somewhat faster, but does that translate anything to the average consumers experience? Likely not. What I would like to see them improve upon and I’m sure others would agree, is angles in which Face ID can unlock in multiple positions. I gather that’s going to require with the sensors and camera to be altered in some form or another, but I think 2019 will be more of a year for Face ID improvements.

This makes me so happy, but can someone tell me why there is country music playing in the background?
 
Awesome, happy for any improvement in this area. Face ID was already better than Touch ID in my eyes, but it will only get better over time.

Okay, what he is saying (it's a Dutch video) :

about 0.1 seconds faster during daylight with their test of 10 times unlocking iPhone X vs iPhone Xs, while during the test (10 times unlocking) at night in the dark, FaceID on the Xs is about 0.3 seconds faster on the new Xs

It's great that FaceID is getting faster and more accurate but it's got a tough act to follow because, at least for me, TouchID reached the absolute end-point for the development of fingerprint scanners.

I'm assuming FaceID isn't there yet but the level of invisibility that TouchID has achieved is I hope what Apple is aiming for and will eventually get to. For whatever future version of the iPhone does get to FaceID perfection iPhone 12 the test would be if you were able to take two units of that phone, one with FaceID and all security locking disabled so that it opens up for anyone and the other with the latest and greatest FaceID programmed to someone's face then give that someone each of the phones to play with for a while and if they can't tell which one is actually authenticating them before unlocking then you have the perfect implementation. I really do think the TouchID in my 6s is good enough to pass that test, I am never for an instant aware of it when unlocking my phone.

My impression is that FaceID isn't a match for TouchID yet in terms of being totally invisible to the user but I think this latest Xs is going to be the point when I jump into the FaceID world and see how I get on. I deliberately sat out the X because it was first gen FaceID and I wanted to wait for at least one update before deserting my beloved TouchID.

Has anyone noticed that I'm pretty impressed with TouchID :) ?
[doublepost=1537376436][/doublepost]Apple made a huge thing in the launch about the massively faster neural engine in the A12 (from memory I think up from 800 million ops per second in the A11 to 5 trillion in the A12). I wonder how much use the FaceID software makes of on-device learning to tune its recognition accuracy and maybe speed too. If it does do some of that then maybe people with an Xs will see some quite worthwhile improvements in their device's FaceID performance over the first days/weeks as the software does more and more unlocks and is able to tune its internal recognition network for increased accuracy and possibly also for efficiency (hence speed) too.
