Wondering how much ram do you guys have free with your jailbroken apps added. Like restart your phone and say how much free ram you have.

I'm at about 145 free on my 3gs. Wondering if that's low

I get like 100MB free on my 3G S, absolute max. Typically 80-90 30 seconds after restarting.

It was like 130 consistently before I started using Winterboard.

Im at 158mb.. No winterboard. Just SBS settings, mobile substrate, ssh etc installed. Using LiveClock took up alot of ram and seemed to also drain my battery faster. I just uninstalled it now, and my ram just back up to normal.

3GS with Winterboard, liveclock, kirikae, etc and I usually get about 150 at respring, typically running about 120 under typical use, less if I have things backgrounded.

I'm new at this so you must forgive me, but how can you tell how much ram you have? I looked in Cydia under Storage and it says I have 500M or 23.4 percent free. I have lockinfo, Cydia, fake carrier, blackra1n, and winterboard installed.

Performance is fine and the batter drains somewhat faster than before jailbreaking. The only real performance issue is when I quit an app by hitting the home button it lags and takes about 2-3 seconds to close.

the easiest way to find how much ram you have is to install sbsettings... sbsettings allows you to toggle different preferences such as 3g, brightness, wifi, bluetooth, etc rather than going into settings and doing it... it also shows you how much free ram your iphone currently has

I typically have ~140-145mb after a respring (90 seconds later).

While most everyone knows that WinterBoard is a memory hog, the theme you use also comes into play. For me, as an example, I switched back to my second favorite theme, Buuf2 in mid November. SBSettings was reporting ~100mb of memory after a respring (and waiting 90 seconds). So, I switched back to Aquoah, and memory went back to what I mentioned above.

I don't know if deleting the unused icons of a WB theme would help. There's over 1600 icons with Aquoah now.....

what would be a healthy ram size. I'm about 112MB right now. Seems like 150ish is healthy. How does one improve it? What are the most likey apps to cause this? is there there an app that shows you what processes are running similar to task manager on windows

themeing via winterboard uses lots of RAM. Backgrounder, safari, any mobile substrate hooks. SBSettings is a fantastic app to view background processes. Standard apps running in the background after respring are Phone, Mail, and iPod. (iPhone)

wow just used sbsettings and hit the icon "processes" like suggested and hit "free up memory" and now i'm up to 150MB. What is it doing to achieve this? when i just repspring i only got to 120. What is it adjusting to get the extra 30MB:D

edit... now its at 143 but still

I'm at 145 and I have winterboard installed and using the ibox carbon theme with a few tweaks.

Always have around 160MB. Also i have winterboard, rotation inhib, 5icon, fontswap. Sometimes ill peak at 170

Also have a 3gs obviiously.

performance wise- never get any lag, fast as always

back down to 117MB. Hmmm I have a 3GS as well. Wonder what could be causing it.

Everything you use on your phone uses some memory. Lots of things get held in memory in case they are needed again, but the iPhone is pretty good about freeing up memory if it needs it. What SBSettings is doing is taking things out of memory that aren't currently being used, meaning that the OS has to grab them from flash next time they are needed. This can actually slow down your phone.

In my opinion this obsession with free memory is a little silly; free memory is wasted memory. Sure, if you get too low it may cause problems with backgrounded processes; but unless you are noticing performance problems there's really nothing to worry about.

Got 147 MB on a 3GS right after reboot.

I'm running Intelliscreen, Backgrounder, Proswitcher, Smsettings. Mail also running right away because I've got Exchange sync.

Don't sweat your free memory unless it gets really low, say under 30 MB. Heck I wouldn't even bother looking at what the free RAM is unless you are diagnosing a problem. The iPhone will keep Safari, iPod, and other apps running (after you first open them) and automatically close them if the memory runs low. If you have multiple tabs open in Safari, that will also be a factor.

Basically, if you have a 3GS, you don't even need to think about RAM. To monitor whether you are going overboard with jailbreak apps that run in the background, just decide if you are getting too much lag or instability.

well said.

Why are only 3G(S) users posting? I get down to 12 mb free on my 3G and still no observed problems.

My 3G starts out somewhere between 45 and 55 and runs better than ever. No lag, no crashes, very responsive. But, as thelatinist said, there's usually no reason to worry about free memory.

SBSettings frees memory by asking for a lot of it so the system has to dump unused data from memory to fill the order. Then SBSettings cancels the order, so to speak. This is done by the system automatically when more memory is needed anyway.

You can see a demonstration (at least on a 3G) by opening the mail app and opening an email. It will take a second or two to open. Go back to the main mail screen then click the email again and it will open that email instantly. Now free memory with SBSettings and click that email and it will take a second or two to open. The data needed to display the email had been dumped from memory. Safari is even worse.

I sit at about 10-20MB free on a 3g, If i clear everything out, i get up to about 40-45. Only regret is i cant VNC into my home computer w/ my 3g's memory limitations.

Free memory is wasted memory, and I dont mind having things cached for quicker access, it will uncache it is need-be, but chances are I will do the same 3 things on my phone all day, making cache godly.
