Im interested in purchasing parallels and running XP or Vista on my Macbook. How much hard drive space will this use up? Not including any downloaded programs for windows after the fact.

Per the MS website, XP requires 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space* minimum, while Vista requires 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
I have an IMAC C2D, and I've been running XP on a Fat32 formatted partition. Formatted mine to 25 Gigs. Plenty of space for my games and apps. I wonder what other people have formatted their XP partition size to???

I've allocated 70 GB on my imac's disk to Windows XP Bootcamp partition, mainly because I have Steam on there and will be installing all my old games there as well. I didn't want to run out of space or start cleaning out games...
But then, when I ordered I had Apple install the 500 GB disk, so I still got loads left over
Update : I forgot to mention that I boot my bootcamp partition using the latest parallels beta build.

Expect to use about 4 GB for a basic bootable XP installation with service packs installed. When you set up Parallels, use an expanding disk, and configure it to be much larger than that, maybe 20 GB. That allows your Windows XP file system to grow up to 20 GB if you need it some day. But because it is expanding, the disk image will only use as much space on your MacBook as it actually used by XP.
You probably won't need a lot of space unless you are planning on gaming anyway. Anything like video editing, etc. that takes up a lot of room will be better done on os x
