Like the title says, how much ram can I put into this 17" iMac? I'm not tech savvy at all and have no idea how to look up this information. Any suggestions where to buy it?

Sorry everyone, I found that my iMac can support up to 3GB of ram.

Still could use some advice on the most trustworthy places that will give me a good deal. I'm looking to get the 3GB worth of memory.

Additional questions: should I get 2x2GB sticks so that I can use the dual channel memory (whatever the heck that is)?

No, the current chipsets cannot access each stick equally so it'll be a waste of money.
It'll recognise it as ~3.4GB.
People place far too much stock in this dual-channel thing.

Well, it depends rather what 17" iMac you have

17" G4 iMac 700MHz/800 MHz: 1 Gb (1 x 512 Mb DIMM, 1 x 512 Mb SODIMM PC133)
17" G4 iMac 1 GHz+: 2 Gb (1 x 1 Gb DIMM, 1 x 1 Gb SODIMM DDR PC2700)
17" G5 iMac 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 GHz: 2 Gb (2 x 1 Gb DDR DIMM PC3200)
17" G5 iMac 1.9 GHz and 2.1 GHz iSight model: 2.5 Gb (512 built in + 1 x 2 GB DDR2-533 DIMM)
17" iMac intel CoreDuo: 2 Gb (2 x 1 Gb DDR2-667 SODIMM)
17" iMac intel Core2Duo: 3 Gb (1 x 2 Gb, 1 x 1 Gb DDR2-667 SODIMM)

Welcome to MR -- please be specific about which machine and OS version you have when posting questions, and you'll get faster and better answers

Choose a reputable RAM vendor who guarantees compatibility with your machine, offers a lifetime warranty, and a no cost return if it doesn't work. If you are in the USA (another thing you should specify, this is a very international forum) then the most-recommended vendors on MR are Crucial (use the link at the top of this page), OWC (http://www.MacSales.com) and Data Memory Systems (http://www.datamem.com)

Thanks
