Hey guys, I'm finally sold my mac pro and am trying to figure out how to spec my new mac studio, which will be dual used for davinci resolve and after effects work mainly.

I tested a studio with 128gb and it was already much faster than my current mac pro with 192gigs in both apps- but still, going down to 128 feels like a downgrade. Does anyone have any idea if the 192 gb will make any noticable difference for after effects work, which is a notorious ram hog?

I would think I would rather have too much RAM (192GB) than find out I don't have enough RAM (128GB)...?

Depends on how you use AE.
If you use is professionally, the most you can get.

Though resolution is hardly a good indicator, 1080p comps easily eat up 100gb on the m1 ultra. More sophisticated projects or 4K will go beyond that.

I recommend also having a large disk cache drive/folder, 1tb+.
You don't want to re-render everything whenever you 'undo' something.

I mean yeah. The disk cache will definitely have me get 2TB. About the ram.. I used to have 196 on the Mac Pro and after effects took it all!! But when I tested the m2 ultra 128 gb against my old Mac Pro it was still so much faster and didn’t fill up all the ram. I think it takes always as much as it can get anyways. I’m most definitely gonna upgrade again in a year and a half or so to an m3 ultra- so my thinking is to keep the costs down at least a tiny bit this time and then go all in next round.

The main question would be- how much of an actual speed improvement would the extra ram give?? In percentages. Any guesses?
